WELCOME BACK, GOOD SIR

March 9th, 2005 | by Tom

Something I think everyone needs to know about is that Brian Carroll has returned to his web comic roots with a brand new Instant Classic story. It’s called “Brothers Donathan” and it takes place one year after the events of the Prologue and about four years before the events to take place in the “Union Forever” storyline Carroll has yet to share with us.

Brian’s been kind of having a rough time of things lately, so it’s good to see him pouring his energy into his art. I’ve always enjoyed his style and know for a fact he can run circles around the majority of web comic writers out there when it comes to plot and characterization.

All you have to do is look at the home page of the Instant Classic web site to know that Brian has some pretty lofty, long-term ambitions. There is a story with a far-reaching scope just waiting to be told. You can tell he’s thought it all out. I wish I could plan that well in advance.

Anyway, welcome back, Brian Carroll. The movie-themed web comic genre is a little less lonesome with you in it.

SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC (LOCAL MEANING ONLINE)

In the THorum, I have a friend who posts under the handle “Beefy”. Beefy is a good guy. Beefy is musically talented. Beefy has a website. Beefy has just released an album.

It’s called “The Whitesican EP” and it’s available – FOR FREE – on Beefy’s site, right here.

Beefy wants you to know that while you can download 8 songs for free (!!!), he appreciates donations. If you donate $5, you get a 9th song added to your queue, and you get that warm ember glowing in your soul that says, “Hey, you just supported someone’s art. Good for you.”

If you’re fans at all of Albino Blacksheep, you might have seen a Flash version of “Whitesican” appears on the site. I’ll tell you right now that I have the MP3 version of this song as well as the others on my iPod right now. Another stand-out is “David’s Sister”

Why don’t you check out Beefy’s album and give it a download?

GIVE ME SOME TIME TO THINK OF SOMETHING WITTY

I’m trying to figure out the best way to frame my commentary about today’s comic. I’m aware that it’s slightly obtuse in it’s delivery.

So in the meantime, while I’m trying to figure that out – Why don’t you vote for Theater Hopper at buzzComix. The top 10 list recently reset and I hate to see the strip out of contention.

As a reward, you’ll be treated to one of the weirdest/cutest incentive sketches I’ve ever drawn! Oh, and I have a new banner up over at buzz. If the comic gets into the top 10, you’ll get to see it.

Thanks, y’all!

MORE THOUGHTS SOON

So the Oscar’s were last night and there were no real surprises. Part of me thinks that’s unfortunate, but I also feel a sense of relief that things were played a little safe. Maybe it’ll return some dignity to the awards. Give them a little more meaning.

I have more thoughts on the specific awards, but drawing and coloring the crowd scenes in today’s comic kind of took it out of me. I’ll be back later with more.

BECAUSE IT NEEDS TO BE SAID…

Don’t mean to toot my own horn, but I think the buzzComix incentive sketch I drew for today’s comic is probably one of the better sketches I’ve done in a while. Vote for Theater Hopper to see the whole thing.

Oh, and in case you missed it yesterday, I left a post regarding the winner or the original art raffle from January. If you want to find out how to win the raffle from February, all the information can be found there.

WINNER OF JANUARY’S ART RAFFLE!

February 24th, 2005 | by Tom
Posted In: Blog

Something that I meant to do yesterday but didn’t get a chance to do was post the winner of January’s art raffle.

You might have remembered last month that I created a new desktop wallpaper for people who donated to the site. It was an image of Cami dressed up like Elektra. It looked a little something like this:

Well, as part of a promotion to increase donations, advertising and merchandising sales, I decided it would be fun to raffle off the original artwork used in the creation of that desktop.

I am proud to announce that out of a field of 37 participants, Joel Schooling is the winner of January’s art raffle and he will soon be mailed the original 11″ x 17″ piece of artwork, created with loving detail in permanent ink on heavy Bristol board.

Now you’re probably saying to yourself, “Gee, Tom. I wish I could win some original art!” Well, you can! Because I’ve since created A NEW desktop wallpaper (available for donators) featuring Tom as the hero in the recent Keanu Reeves movie Constantine:

…and just as before, the original ink rendition of this artwork is the prize in February’s raffle.

How do you get your name in the running? It’s quite simple. You can either donate to the site, buy something from the store (don’t forget that buttons are still for sale!) or reserve some advertising space and you’ll have your chance to win when I pull a name from a hat.

I know there are only a few days left in the month of February, so that’s why you need to decide now if you want to participate. I will say this, however… February is a short month and things have been a little slow since I’ve suspended t-shirt sales. So your odds of winning this piece are pretty good.

If you need a little extra incentive for turning over your hard-earned cash, remember that donators automatically get their name listed on the Walk of Fame and are also given special access to otherwise hidden areas of the THorum.

If you’re feeling generally altruistic, feel good knowing that any donation you make will be put towards covering expenses for this year’s convention schedule. Our first stop being the Kansas City Planet Comicon convention April 2-3.

Anyway, that about covers it. E-mail me if you have any questions!

WISH HIM A HAPPY BIRTHDAY

February 21st, 2005 | by Tom

No blog just yet because it’s 1:00 in the morning. I really wish I could write these out in advance, but frankly, I’m not that smart.

I had a crazy movie weekend and watched Million Dollar Baby, Sideways and Garden State on DVD in the span of 24 hours. I want to talk to you about it, but I’d like to wait until I don’t have to pause for 30 seconds between each word to make sure the spelling looks right.

In the meantime, why don’t you vote for Theater Hopper at buzzComix. Today’s incentive sketch isn’t comic-related, but instead a portrait of my beagle Truman. He’s made a few appearances in the comic in days of yore. Tuesday is his birthday. He turns 3. I love that little furry freak.

ALPHA AND OMEGA’S KINGDOM COME

Hello! Just wanted to give birthday shout outs to my friends Adam and Mark. Adam’s birthday was Friday and Mark’s is today. Good job guys, you make it look easy.

On a sadder note, Dr. Hunter S. Thompson died Sunday of an apparent suicide. More information can be found here.

I watched Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas with my buddy Steve 63 times during the last two years of college, cementing me as a Thompson fan. If you haven’t read The Rum Diary and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas you are missing out. I also really enjoyed Hell’s Angels. Some of his other, more political work is less favorable to me as it is not as timeless.

I encourage you to check out his work.

CELEBRATE THE ADVERTISERS

February 18th, 2005 | by Tom
Posted In: Blog

Something kind of neat happened recently. For the first time in a long time, Theater Hopper has filled all five advertising spots available on the site!

To celebrate this momentous occasion, I thought it would be fun to run down the list of advertisers (with links, of course) and talk about what makes them so great.

You know. Aside from the fact that they were willing to spend money with me.
