EXPLOSION!

September 17th, 2007 | by Tom
Posted In: Blog

Okay, as promised. Here’s the t-shirt design I came up with based off the fake poster in Wednesday’s comic…

EXPLOSION! t-shirt mock up

I’m looking for some honest feedback, guys. So what’s your opinion? Do you like it? Would you wear it if it were on a t-shirt? What needs to be tweaked?

E-mail me at theaterhopper@hotmail.com with your opinions. If there’s a demand, I’ll hopefully set up a pre-order for them this week!

3:10 TO YUMA

September 7th, 2007 | by Tom
Posted In: Blog

Later this evening I plan on seeing 3:10 to Yuma. Or, as I like to refer to it, “The Movie I Didn’t Know I Was Looking Forward To.”

Between it’s leads Christian Bale and Russell Crowe, this film has serious acting pedigree. Plus, it’s good to see Crowe playing a ruthless bad-ass after what seems like years of playing lightweights. I think that wine movie he made with Ridley Scott was kind of a wake-up call.

This is completely off track, but I’ve been growing a beard since about last week and for some reason, I feel the 7-day scruff is apt for viewing 3:10 to Yuma. Basically, I neglected to shave over the holiday weekend, kind of liked what I saw and said to myself “Let’s see how long we can keep this going!” Cami hates it, though. She wanted me to shave it off three days ago.

As much as I love my wife and as much as I want her to find me attractive, I’ve kept the beard because, for some strange reason, I think it’s going to add authenticity to my movie-going experience. This is pretty much the warped head-space I live in 24/7.

At any rate, I had some information shared with me about a 3:10 to Yuma poster charity auction and I thought I would pass it along to you guys. If you’re interested, Lionsgate has three posters signed by by Russell Crowe, Christian Bale, Peter Fonda, Ben Foster, James Mangold, and Cathy Konrad benefiting The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation. The winning bidders will receive studio certified posters signed by the cast and filmmakers along with a signed letter verifying their authenticity.  Auctions will continue through the film’s opening weekend.

If that sounds like something you’re interested in and you’d like your chance at owning a piece of authentic movie memorbilia, click here!

DVD GIVEAWAYS

August 20th, 2007 | by Tom
Posted In: Blog

Hey, gang. I just wanted to send a quick reminder to everyone to listen to tonight’s broadcast of The Triple Theater at 9:00 PM CST over at Talkshoe. And to help keep your memory fresh, I wanted to take a moment to outline the two new DVDs we’ll be giving away to people who either listen in live or download the show before Wednesday.

Wild Hogs - Tim Allen, John Travolta, Martin Lawrence, William H. Macy

First up is Wild Hogs. The star-studded cast of this hit comedy includes Tim Allen, John Travolta, Martin Lawrence and William H. Macyas four suburban couch jockeys who suffer from mid-life crises and take motorcycles to the American asphalt expecting nothing but fun and adventure. But being an easy rider isn’t so easy, especially after a chance encounter with the real-life Del Fuegos biker gang proves just how lame and tame the Hogs really are.

From what I’ve heard, Ray Liotta steals the show as the leader of the rival biker gang. If for nothing else, he’s the reason to check out this film.

If your curious about the movie, here are a few clips you can watch:

  • Break his Legs
William H. Macy confronts the age old question – what do you need more – hands or legs?
  • Slap the Bull
To know you’re alive, sometimes you gotta slap the bull.
  • Bonus Clip
How to Get Your Wife To Let You Buy a Motorcycle.
  • Bonus Clip
    Bloopers
The Ex - Zach Braff, Amanda Peet, Jason Bateman, Charles Grodin, Mia Farrow, Donald Logue, Amy Poehler, Amy Adams, Fred Armisen

The other DVD we have for you tonight is The Ex. Tom Reilly (Zach Braff) and his wife Sofia (Amanda Peet) are in for some major changes now that they have a newborn. As a lawyer, Sofia has always provided a comfortable living while Tom has contributed love, support and the occasional paycheck. When Sofia decides to be a stay-at-home mom all that changes. Tom moves the family to Ohio to work for his father-in-law (Charles Grodin). His boss, Chip (Jason Bateman), happens to still carry a torch for Sofia from their high school days. Chip will stop at nothing to see Tom defeated while no one but Tom can see Chip for the evil genius he is. Through it all Tom’s esteem is depleted, his manhood challenged (by a surprisingly large adversary) and he’s watching his family slip away.

Ever since Arrested Development, Jason Bateman has been a favorite of mine. Hey, I’m just as surprised as you thank I’m enamored with the guy from The Hogan Family and Teen Wolf, Too. But guess what? The guy is hilarious in damn near everything he’s in.

So there you have it. Those are the DVDs I have available for giveaway.

Be sure to listen to The Triple Feature over at TalkShoe tonight at 9:00 PM CST for the first half of a clue that will put you in the running. Then come back here on Wednesday for the second half of the clue. Put both clues together and send them to me at theaterhopper@hotmail.com along with your name, age and mailing address. And please keep your contest entries seperate – one for Wild Hogs and one for The Ex. It will help me keep things organized.

Thanks again and we’ll see you at The Triple Feature tonight!

ANOTHER EXCELENT TRIPLE FEATURE

August 13th, 2007 | by Tom
Posted In: Blog

Before I forget, everyone needs to listen to The Triple Feature talkcast tonight at 9:00 PM CST at TalkShoe.com. Gordon, Joe and I were all at Wizard World Chicago this weekend, so we’ll likely be talking about that. So if you’re tired of us talking about movies all the time and maybe want us to give you a little behind-the-scenes web comics talk, tonight is the night to listen!

As a matter of fact (and I’m just thinking about this now), I’m going to see if I can get some of my web comic buddies to call in and provide a little extra commentary. Will they make an appearance? Listen in live to find out!

THE SITE N’ STUFF

August 6th, 2007 | by Tom
Posted In: Blog

Apologies if the site is acting a little funky for you. Apparently, they was a huge uptick in spam activity in the comments section, so our generous hosting server froze the database it was running from. We’re trying to come up with a solution to keep spammers out, but they’re a tricky lot. I don’t know what we have in place is keeping them out. I was going through the archives the other day and my Spider-Man 3 review had something like 1,500 comments behind it!

Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep spammers out? If not, I might have to shelf the comments function, which would REALLY bum me out. Send me an e-mail if you’ve got ideas.

Stuff like this always seems to happen when I’m up to my eyeballs in things that need to be taken care of immediately. I’m trying to keep my focus on Wizard World Chicago at the end of the week and am preparing now for that. But stuff keeps distracting me.

One distraction I look forward to is The Triple Feature talkcast over at TalkShoe each week. If you’re not familiar by now, we broadcast every Monday at 9:00 PM CST. I encourage you to participate in tonight’s show. Joe will be going over his recent trip to San Diego Comic Con, I’ll be talking about Theater Hopper’s 5 year anniversary and, of course, there was a WHOLE SLEW of movies that came out this weekend. Among them The Bourne Ultimatum, which had the highest August opening weekend ever.

So we’ll be talking about that.

See you then!

ADDENDUM

Apologies to those of you who came to the site on Friday to no blog. Forty lashes with a wet noodle for me.

Pretty much I was going to talk about how excited I was for The Simpsons Movie. When I didn’t get around to it Friday night and we ended up seeing The Simpsons Movie Saturday night, it felt redundant to retroactively talk about how I was anticipating it. So I held off for the full review that was posted above. I hope you enjoyed it.

Be sure to stop by the site tomorrow for a DVD review of 300. I was lucky enough to be sent an advanced copy and I have some thoughts for you on the day of it’s release. I know it’s outside the normal posting schedule, but think of it as an apology for bailing out on you guys Friday.

Oh – and there will still be comics this week. You can expect new strips on Wednesday adn Friday as usual.

By the way – did anyone notice that I snuck three comics into the mix last week? I was hoping to keep the streak alive this week. But two movie reviews and two comics is a fair trade, I think.

Last note: Be sure to check out The Triple Feature talkcast tonight over at TalkShoe at 9:00 PM CST. Gordon, Joe and I will be talking about The Simpsons Movie, I’m sure. Well, Joe might not be in attendance because he’s supposed to be flying back from the San Diego Comic Con (lucky bastard). But I’m hoping he has an opportunity to call in and give us the scoop on all the big movies coming out in 2008. If not, I’m sure Gordon and I will have lots to talk about. Superbad, The Ten and The Bourne Ultimatum all come out this Friday. So there’s a lot on our horizon!

Call in to talk to us live! See you then!

*SNICKER…*

Real quick….

DUMMY!

BWA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!

Man, not even 24 hours after I made my anti-Lohan rant, the dummy gets herself arrested for driving under the influence and for possession of cocaine ONE BLOCK AWAY FROM THE SANTA MONICA POLICE STATION! Her movie, I Know Who Killed Me, comes out in theaters on Friday. Brilliant promotion strategy, Lindsay!

Obviously Ms. Lohan has substance abuse problems and I don’t mean to make light of that. She clearly needs help and needs to get the hell out of Hollywood for a while. But think for a moment if this was anyone else. Some crazy crackhead you read about in your local paper. If you saw a headline that said “Local nut job high on angel dust involved in car chase” you’d WANT the cops to take them off the street. You’d want the judge to throw the book at them.

Not to go on another rant, but Lohan’s stint in rehab stemming from her Memorial Day arrest (for which she showed up in court for and paid $30,000 in bond toward five days ago) wasn’t enough to keep her from partying. So it’s time to employ new tactics. If they’re willing to throw Paris Hilton in jail for (admittedly) much, much less, then there should be no favoritism shown to Lohan.

At this point, you have to think that her career is pretty much over in mainstream Hollywood movies. She’s too much of a liability. I’m sure there will be a comeback down the road. She’ll clean herself up, do a couple of indie movies and then pull a Robert Downey Jr. If she’s smart, she might actually earn her credibility back.

Too bad her parents are totally nuts. I’m sure she could use some sensible advice from someone with influence over her. Someone that ISN’T her dealer.

BEFORE I FORGET

July 23rd, 2007 | by Tom

One more thing before I forget.

I’m getting read to go to Wizard World Chicago in a couple of weeks and I need everyone’s help.

I’m putting together a small booklet with my best comics to give away to people who come to visit me on Artist’s Alley and I’m using the Top 10 of the Top 50 Comics as my sampling.

So if you guys have a little free time to go through the archive and rank your favorite strips (don’t be afraid to use that search bar to find them!), I would appreciate it. I want to give new readers the most accurate representation possible of what Theater Hopper is all about! Who better to let them know than the fans!

Thanks for your feedback. It’s always interesting to check in on the Top 50 from time to time to see what you guys are enjoying!

Later!

THE OTHER STUFF

July 2nd, 2007 | by Tom
Posted In: Blog

A few things I forgot to mention in the first post:

  1. A few people were congratulating me last Friday for reaching my 700th comic. Actually, that was a typo because I accidentally counted Wendesday’s “Boo hoo! My computer is FUBAR!” messages as an comic. I’ve made the correct and TODAY’S comic is my 700th – which is mind-numbing to think about.

I think the last time I celebrated the number of comics I posted was 400 or probably 500. But anymore, I think I’m just into celebrating anniversaries. You’ll hear from me again about it on August 5.

  2. Don’t forget to call in and listen to The Triple Feature talkcast tonight at 9:00 PM CST over at Talkshoe. I pretty much plan on giving the floor to Joe to talk about Live Free or Die Hard because it sounds like he had a blast at that movie and I want him to tell us all about it.

We’ll probably be talking about Transformers, too – if you’re interested. Join in and talk to us live!

  3. It’s kind of a long story about how it came into my possession, but I’m auctioning off an 8GB iPhone on eBay and the auction ends around 10:00 PM tonight. So if you’re interested or know someone that might be interested, bid away!

For the love of God, PLEASE bid. The longer this thing stays in my house, the more I want to love it in unnatural ways.
