DVD COMMENTARY

The crowd in the background of the fourth panel is supposed to be an homage to the creators/characters from whom I borrowed our cameo robots for today’s strip. Can you guess who is who? Vote for Theater Hopper at Web Comics List for a clear view. But forget about that guy on the far left. He’s just a stand in.

For those of you detecting the subtle commentary in today’s strip, congratulations. We’ve just reached the pinnacle of this arc. The whole reason behind introducing the talking DVD player was to get to this point.

I don’t fault Penny Arcade for introducing DIV into the world. If you were going to pick a talking appliance to add as a bristling sidekick, the antiquated DiVX technology was a nice, obscure reference. What I’ve noticed since then is if you have a comic that it somewhat technology-based, it must have some sort of ambulatory robotic counterpart. Hence why the X-Bot from Ctrl+Alt+Del and Pintsize from Questionable Content get a shout-out.

This isn’t meant to be withering criticism. It’s just a device that I’ve noticed in other comics that was lacking in my own. I thought it would be fun to introduce my own talking appliance. But instead of treating it like an official cast member, use it as a mouthpiece to deconstruct some of the cliches inherant in comics. In all storytelling, really.

Almost every comic out there has some kind of fantastic secondary character that comments on how foolish we mortals can be. It’s a way for the author to turn the mirror on the audience without getting in trouble for it. Look at something as generic as Garfield. He’s sarcastic toward his owner that can’t get a date. If you gave a human character those lines, you’d have a hard time relating to him. You’d think he was a real jerk. Give them to the cat and it becomes "Oh, isn’t that cute!"

As revenge on the double standard, I decided to take the concept of the fantastic, impossible comic strip character and turn it back on itself. Take THAT, storytelling device!

But who am I to say what works and what doesn’t? One thing I’ll say, each one of the three comics I took a playful jab at today are certainly getting a lot more traffic than I am. So maybe they’re onto something. Blame Stitch. His comics kind of put me on this anarchist bend. I’ll work it out of my system soon and things will return to normal. The talking DVD arc will end this Friday. So thanks for indulging my quasi-rants in the meantime.

I want to remind everyone that the big sale going on in the store is still happening, but you’re running out of time to make the purchases I know you’re aching to place. Don’t forget that all t-shirts are $9.99, all baby-doll tees are $14.99 and all hoodies are $24.99. Inventory is limited, so we might not have your size in the design you want. Don’t wait for someone else to swoop in and take it! Remember – FREE SHIPPING on all orders!

If I could appeal to you on an emotional level for a minute, even if you’re not interested in buying a shirt…

I could really use your help right now.

I got in a car accident yesterday. Don’t worry. Everyone is fine. No one was injured and I can still drive the car. But winter’s in Iowa aren’t very forgiving and I need to get this fixed as soon as possible. I haven’t gotten an estimate yet (that’s later today). But my insurance deductable is $500. This couldn’t have come at a worse time for us. Not to start playing on the world’s tiniest violin (and I’m not going to go into all the details) but we have a lot of bills flying out the door at the moment. Fixing the car is just one of those unforseen expenses that we’re having to scramble in order to cover.

My logic is this… I have all of these shirts that I need to sell. You like to wear shirts, don’t you? What’s stopping you from getting something really cool that you know you’ll enjoy and – in the process – help a stranger out of a pickle?

I’m not asking for charity. That’s never been the kind of relationship we’ve had. All I’m saying is that I have some great shirts at the lowest prices I’ve ever sold them and you would be doing me a monumental favor by buying one. All the while, you still get something in return. It’s a great deal all around. Everybody  wins.

Think about it and thanks again for your support.

CAN YOU TELL ME WHO THIS IS?

March 12th, 2007 | by Tom
Posted In: Blog

Okay, I need some direct feedback on this. I’m a little self-conscious and I need to see if people will recognize the person I’ve drawn for a t-shirt I’m putting together.

DO YOU RECOGNIZE THIS MAN?

DO YOU RECOGNIZE THIS MAN?

I don’t want to provide any clues as to who it is or why I’m drawing him. I just want to know if people looking at it will immediately recognize him and say “Oh, that’s so-and-so!” Otherwise, the joke in the shirt I’m designing won’t work at all.

So, who do you think this is? Leave your comments below!

EXPLOSION!

September 17th, 2007 | by Tom
Posted In: Blog

Okay, as promised. Here’s the t-shirt design I came up with based off the fake poster in Wednesday’s comic…

EXPLOSION! t-shirt mock up

I’m looking for some honest feedback, guys. So what’s your opinion? Do you like it? Would you wear it if it were on a t-shirt? What needs to be tweaked?

E-mail me at theaterhopper@hotmail.com with your opinions. If there’s a demand, I’ll hopefully set up a pre-order for them this week!

KISS EACH OTHER ON THE MOUTH

March 6th, 2009 | by Tom

People really seemed to take a shine to yesterday’s comic. Specifically, the punch line. So I decided to strike while the iron was hot and whip up a t-shirt design…

Kiss Each Other On The Mouth

What do you guys think? Leave me your comments. If there is enough good will to pursue it, I’ll see about printing them up in the next few weeks!

EEEEE-VAAHH

March 9th, 2009 | by Tom
Posted In: Blog

Yesterday afternoon it was cold and crummy outside and everyone in the house was asleep taking an afternoon nap.

I, on the other hand, am incapable of sleep. So I decided to whip up a quick t-shirt design and wanted to get your thoughts on it. You probably recognize the logo.

Eve plant logo, Wall-E

Eve plant logo, Wall-E, t-shirt, small, white

Eve plant logo, Wall-E, t-shirt, small, black

Eve plant logo, Wall-E, t-shirt, large, white

Eve plant logo, Wall-E, t-shirt, large, black

It’s the logo that appears on Eve’s chest when she acquires the plant in Wall-E.

I made it for a couple of reasons. One, because I just like the design. It’s simple and effective. Two, because I looked everywhere online for a similar shirt and couldn’t find one. So I thought, “I should make one for myself. If there’s enough interest, I’ll sell them on the site.”

So what do you think? Do I have any kindred spirits out there? Do you like the larger design that puts the logo in the center of the chest or the smaller design that is off-center and placed on the chest similar to where it was on Eve? What about shirt color?

White like Eve or black (because I know that black is the best-selling t-shirt color on the planet)?

Leave your me your feedback! I’m curious to find out what you think!

NO SHIRT

NO SHIRT

I realize the premise of today’s comic is kind of gross. But to me, designing a robot to take the place of your dead son running around without a shirt and in short pants is a little more disturbing.

Also, once the phrase “shirtless charms” wormed its way into my head, there was no way I was NOT going to us it.

FUN FACT: “Shirtless charms” is a phrase one can also use for Matthew McConaughey.

I have been seeing trailers and promotional stills for Astro Boy for months, but it didn’t really start to catch my attention until this week. I think it looks like a servicable kids film and since I learned that the team behind the CGI T.M.N.T. movie from a few years back were the ones that had put Astro Boy together, that earned it a few points in my favor.

I dunno, though. Astro Boy is an animation classic. I always flinch when producers try to reintroduce these properties to modern audiences. I mean, if it’s done well, what’s the harm? A new generation is exposed to a great character. But if you mess it up, you risk alienating generations of fans who grew up with the character.

I will say this: From the stills and trailers I’ve seen, it appears that they’ve solved Astro Boy’s wardrobe problem in this film. I notice him running around in pants and a long-sleeve t-shirt. So maybe the producers of this film were a little creeped out by Astro Boy’s semi-nudity as well.

What about you guys? Any interest in seeing Astro Boy this weekend? Any hard core Astro Boy fans out there? Or, with Halloween creeping up on us, is everyone going to see Paranormal Activity instead?

I know that Saw VI comes out this weekend. But I’m more interested to see how it holds up against Paranormal Activity. Paranormal Activity has all the buzz around it right now. When it comes to Saw VI, all I read are people’s complaints about how Tobin Bell shows up as Jigsaw after DEFINITIVELY being killed in Saw III. I kind of hope Paranormal Activity puts an end to the Saw franchise’s stranglehold over Halloween – or at least puts a dent in it.

As for me, I’ve pretty much determined that I am too much of a weenie to see Paranormal Activity in theaters. I would go, but I can’t find anyone to watch it with me and there is NO WAY I’m going by myself.

I guess that’s why I wasn’t too upset with myself when I spoiled the entire film for myself after reading the plot synopsis on Wikipedia. On paper, the film doesn’t sound that scary. The things that the supernatural entity does to torment the protagonists seems kind of lightweight. So after I finished reading it, I was left asking myself “That’s it? This is what people are freaking out about?” Although, I’m sure if I was in the theater watching it, I would feel much differently. I’m no tough guy.

I guess I compare it to the horror films that I have seen that have shook me. Films like The Exorcist and The Shining. Films that were once books and are very lyircal, convincing and visceral about the true horror the heroes in them experience. If someone wrote a Paranormal Activity as a book first, I don’t think it would scare me.

I know a few of you have seen Paranormal Activity. Leave your thoughts about the film in the comments below.

Beyond that, I don’t have much more to share except Cami and I went to see our doctor yesterday and we have a birth date for Baby Brazelton. Cami will undergo a repeat c-section at 8:30 AM, Thursday, December 10. We’re thrilled to know that we have a delivery date. It’s been a hectic year and I’ve personally been distracted by a lot of things swirling around in my life. I’ve sometimes felt guilty for not anticipating the new baby’s arrival as much as I should. But with a date in mind, it really gives us something to look forward to.

I made Baby Brazelton’s birth date announcement on Twitter yesterday and joked that there would be no new comic on Friday, December 11. A lot of people came back with offers to submit guest strips and I was very encouraged by the show of support. I’ve decided that I’m going to open the flood gates and accept ALL guest strips in advance of Baby Brazelton’s arrival in December. In fact, I’m planning on taking the month of December off (I’ll still update the blog, though).

December is hectic enough with holidays and family gatherings. A new baby is going to splinter things even further. I’d rather put my focus where it is most needed – tending to the baby – and put the comic on the backburner for a while.

I think I’ve run less than 10 guest strips all year, so I feel like I deserve a little break. If you are interested in contributing to guest comic month, shoot me an e-mail at theaterhopper@hotmail.com and I will put you on the list. Since December is a long way away at the moment, I’m going to keep everyone’s contact information together so I can send reminders.

That’s it for now. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you here on Monday!

ARTFULLY TITLED

March 15th, 2011 | by Tom
Posted In: Bonus Materials

Picked up this gem from Noah Garfinkel over at Best Week Ever who (I guess, in turn) picked it up from The High Definite. Hey, credit where credit is due.

Anyway, it’s called “The Art of the Title” – a short montage put together by Ian Albinson for SXSW that is pretty much as-advertised. A series of movie titles displayed chronologically that will (as Garfinkel puts it) “going to make you want to watch movies right now.”

As a graphic designer and a movie buff, I couldn’t agree more. Albinson’s short film lands in the sweet spot where those two spheres of my Venn diagram intersect.

If you’d like to learn more about The Art of the Title, they have a web site where they describe themselves as “A compendium and leading web resource of film and television title design from around the world. We honor the artists who design excellent title sequences.” Check it out!
