Hey, kids! It’s that time again! Time to visit the latest Theater Hopper sponsor!

NJFILMCORE is an awesome site full of crazy independent movies. They’ve got movies about everything from superheroes, to monsters to robots and they’re funny as hell to boot! How can you go wrong.

Also, be sure to check out Theater Hopper favorite Ryan Sais’ new web comic. Actually, it’s more of a comic blog. Ryan used to do a comic called Urban Transmissions that he had to discontinue because he couldn’t keep up with the site maintenance. Now, through the power of Blogger, Ryan is giving us more of his unique perspective almost daily! Check it out!

TO CLEAR UP ANY CONFUSION…

I’m getting some feedback that people can’t figure out who Cami is supposed to be. She’s supposed to be Ellen Ripley from the Alien movies. Click here for a quick visual comparison.

I knew I wanted to cast Cami in the image of a strong female and also as one carrying heavy firepower. I basically wrote this comic starting with the punchline and worked backwards. And, well… this is the result.

Incidentally, Jared is supposed to be Rocky Balboa from the Rocky movies. It’s more of a subtle commentary on the punishment he absorbs and dishes out in equal measure here in the comic…

For what it’s worth.

NEW SPONSORS

Everyone stop what they’re doing and visit our two newest sponsors Suzie View and Syntax Error Comics. They’re both excellent and both need your support.

Syntax Error has recently celebrated its one-year anniversary. For a comic rendered wholly in 3-D, that’s quite an accomplishment! I love Syntax Error. The character models are great and the writing is consistently sharp. The personalities of the characters really shine and I love reading it.

Suzie View is another great comic. You might have heard the news a couple of months ago that Tauhid Bondia (Spells and Whistles) and Erik McCurdy (It’s All Been Done) joint project took a step closer to print syndication when Comics.com picked them up and put them on their site.

What you might not know is that Comics.com is owned by United Media, one of the largest syndicates in the United States. Suzie View has reached a critical juncture in its ascension. If Tauhid and Erik can bring more people to the site and raise their traffic, there is a good possibility that United Media will renew their contract with FULL PRINT DISTRIBUTION!

This would be a major accomplishment in the world of web comics. Tauhid and Erik’s creation would be one of the very few comics to make the leap from digital to print and it would lend great credibility to the medium as a whole.

Please support Suize View and revel in the adventures of a precocious little girl who loves to make independent movies. The comic makes great references to the world of cinema. Anyone who likes Theater Hopper should LOVE Suzie View.

Before I get too far away from the computer, I wanted to take a moment to point out our newest advertiser Awake the Witch. It’s a really cool online specialty store that sells all kind of authentic Pagan accessories.

I don’t want to trivialize things by suggesting that you could pick something up for Halloween, but it IS that time of year. If I’m wrong for pointing that out, just send me an e-mail. Don’t curse my first born, or anything. ;D

PUBLICITY STUNT

September 28th, 2004 | by Tom
Posted In: Blog

I don’t know if you guys are aware of the minor controversy that sprang up between Penny Arcade and buzzComix regarding PA’s charity effort Child’s Play, but basically Gabe took some members of the community to task for some rather disparaging remarks they made. Some had the audacity to suggest that Gabe and Tycho developed Child’s Play as a way of raising their own profile and that their motives weren’t completely altruistic.

What’s important about this story is that Gabe actually linked to the thread in the buzzComix forum where these comments were being made. (the link has since been taken down from the PA main page)

Kind of as a half goof/half publicity stunt, I decided to hop into the middle of the fray to promote Theater Hopper and placed a link for people to click. PA’s fan base is legendary. I knew they would swoop into action immediately after Gabe pointed out people bad mouthing them. So, I decided to capitalize on it a little. If nothing else, I thought I could insert a little ironic levity into what would assuredly become a lot of self-important bickering.

I’m mentioning this because astonishing, my plan seems to have worked! I’ve gotten a few e-mails from people saying they read my post and decided to give Theater Hopper a try.

I just want to say to those of you who came from Penny Arcade by-proxy and found yourself here, WELCOME! I hope you enjoy the comic. We have over 325 comics in our archive, so I’m sure you’ll find something you’ll like. If you’re looking for an introduction to the cast, you can find it here. And if you like online communities give our THorum a try! We have lots of really cool people in there and we’ve managed to stay relatively drama-free for the last year or so.

Y’know, the Internet is a pretty crazy place to live and do business, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

HEAR THEM CALLING

Wow, I tell you guys that I have some advertising space open and you come a’running! Please, please, please check out our latest sponsor. I promise they won’t disapoint.

Wacky Movies is pretty much that. An interesting collection of short films, writing and an internet chat show. Lots of interesting stuff to see here. I got a kick out of The Playground Patrol.

Our next sponsor should need no introduction, but I’m breakin’ all the rules, baby! Joe and Monkey! Zach Miller (formerly of No Pants Tuesday) has been kicking ass and taking names with his new comic. He updates seven days a week, people! And he hasn’t missed a day yet! If that doesn’t earn your faith and devotion, I don’t know what will.

Lastly, don’t forget to check out O’Deer Comics. These guys are frequent advertisers on the site and we love their business. Show them how much we appreciate their support by visiting their web comic often. They update five times a week and have a really good storyline going on right now.

That’s about everything I can think of for the moment. Please visit our sponsors!

If you look at the top of the page and the navigation under the logo, you’ll notice I added a new Cast page to the site. I figured Theater Hopper had been around long enough that newcomers might appreciate a small introduction to the characters instead of having to troll through 325 plus comics in the archive!

Hopefully you guys are digging the changes. Expect more changes in the coming weeks as I drag the remaining pages in the site, kicking and screaming, into the wonderful world of CSS…

THREE’S COMPANY

September 15th, 2004 | by Jared

Let me explain the way I rate movies. I usually find some value in most movies, so I struggle with giving movies very low ratings, even if they are bad. I am adopting the five star rating system since it is the same that I use on Netflix. Since I “enjoy” most movies, I tend to rate almost everything a “3.” I guess that is just the way it is.

“5” Movies that totally rule. I probably own it or should own it. Good acting, good plot, good direction and cinematography, a great movie, one of my favorites. Must be rewatchable. May lack in any of these categories if it is one of my favorites.

“4” Great Movie. Has qualities similar to a “5,” but lacks in some way. Usually it just doesn’t make my favorites list for some reason, probably because it lacks replay value.

“3” Most Movies. Sorry.

“2” This movie was lame in a way that made it flunk out of the Majority “3” group.

“1” I hated this movie or this movie sucked. Probably both.

Does that clear anything up. No? Oh well. Here are the movies I’ve watched this week.

Tremors 1990 “3” After watching parts of this movie a million times, I thought I would finally sit down and watch it. Yup, I don’t think I had really missed too much, but everyone should see this once.

They Live 1988 “3” John Carpenter rules. Though the acting is pretty bad and the thrid act wraps things up in a fairly sloppy way, this was a cool movie. The subliminal message shots were especially nice.

Duplex 2003 “3” I have learned to avoid anything that says Danny DeVito and Director, but I ignored that and actually liked this film. The lead actors ( Ben Stiller, Drew Barrymore ) have both been better, but their chemistry was good and they carried the film.

VIEWFILMIQATSI: LIFE WATCHING MOVIES

September 13th, 2004 | by Jared
Posted In: Blog

Well, I didn’y make it to the theater this weekend to see Resident Evil: Apocalypse, but I guess it will wait for me. I did see a few others at home though. Here is a quick recap:

Intolerable Cruelty – I enjoyed this Coen Brothers movie, though I don’t see it having the replay value of some of their previous films.

Naqoyqatsi – I rounded off Godfrey Reggio and Phillip Glass’s trilogy by watching this third installment of music and images. This is the second best in the trilogy, with Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Balance being the most innovative.

Blow Up – “This is a bad movie, you know that, right?” Patti said before bailing out on this one. I agreed, until I completed watching this and thought about it for a few minutes. I watched the trailer after I finished viewing this film which confirmed that I did understand the point they were trying to make. A little long, with spans that include little dialogue or even conceivable plot, this film is stylized enough to grow on you. You spend the first twenty minutes thinking “Why am I watching this?” but stick with it. Think art film rather than Hollywood Blockbuster. I guarantee Mike Myers has seen this film, as a few of the scenes reflect Austin Powers.
