THE SWELL SEASON – TRAILER

September 16th, 2011 | by Tom
Posted In: Bonus Materials

As someone who fell madly, deeply in love with movie Once and it’s Oscar-winning soundtrack, I was enthralled to learn that the follow-up documentary The Swell Season would be hitting theaters soon.

If you’re a fan of the movie Once and the music of Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, you owe it to yourself to watch this now.

As most people know, Hansard and Irglova carried over the fictional romance captured in Once into the real world. This new documentary captures the two year period after the release of the film and the success and strain it brought upon the couple – a very interesting coda to a unique love story.

For a romantic like myself, the promise of this movie hits me squarely between the eyes. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to see it soon.

What about you? Any thoughts about this new film, about Once or about Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova? Leave your comments below!

MOVIES FOR ADULTS

September 2nd, 2011 | by Tom
Posted In: Bonus Materials

Remember the Summer of 2011? The sequels, the superhero movies and the throngs of “adult” movie goers who complained that there wasn’t anything that met the needs of their discerning taste?

Somehow, Crazy, Stupid Love filled that void and became the antidote for kiddie movies and blockbusters. I’m not sure how. The movie was very much about surface impressions and, in the end, very much a farce. But the whiners were appeased and went back to their domiciles to eat cheese and drink a nice merlot.

Meanwhile, here comes The Debt – a taut, emotional espionage thriller about former Massad agents who worked together in 1960’s East Berlin to track down a Nazi war criminal. Things go wrong and they’re still dealing with the fallout several decades later.

Meanwhile, no one is talking about it.

I don’t know if the pedigree of the film is turning people off or if it just looks too complex since it’s about espionage and takes place in two different time periods. But it’s been getting great reviews and is probably worth checking out. Frankly, you had me at “Helen Mirren.”

Is anyone else planning on checking out The Debt this weekend?

CALLED IT

September 1st, 2011 | by Tom
Posted In: Bonus Materials

Recently I was informed that the producers of the “Not Another…” parody movie franchise (Not Another Teen Movie, Date Movie, Superhero Movie, Disaster Movie, Meet the Spartans) are coming out with a new movie later this year…

Not Another Not Another Movie

Yes, that’s right. Coming soon to a theater near you, Not Another Not Another Movie.

What could it possibly be about? “A struggling movie studio that’s willing to do anything to make a mint – even if it means ruining their reputation, and running the movie industry into the ground.” So says the plot synopsis.

At this point they’re practically DARING you to let them spit on your brains.

What’s amazing to me is that they were even able to round up any “name” performers for this one. I mean, Burt Reynolds, Chevy Chase and Vinnie Jones are exactly discerning actors. But they have a little bit of credibility. Why troll for laughs with this dead-end premise?

Incidentally, I will have it noted that I predicted EXACTLY this over three years ago with the following comic. I think I should be awarded some Internet Pointz for that…

TRAILER – GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGENCE

August 19th, 2011 | by Tom
Posted In: Bonus Materials

Yeah, yeah, yeah. We all know that the original Ghost Rider was clown shoes. And, yes, we all know that Nicholas Cage is probably the LAST guy to deservedly play Johnny Blaze. That said… I’m kind of digging the first trailer for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengence.

I like the way they’ve tweaked Ghost Rider’s look. He kind of looks like a charcoal briquette. Plus, keep in mind that this outing is being lensed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor – the same guys who directed Crank and Crank: High Voltage.

I know that those films have their critics – and rightfully so. But at least we know Ghost Rider won’t be boring this time.

…

Coulda used with out the pee-napalm, though.

TRAILER – MACHINE GUN PREACHER

August 19th, 2011 | by Tom
Posted In: Bonus Materials

I saw the title on this trailer and I immediately thought it was a goof. I had a good zinger in mind, too.

“So, apparently the producers of Machine Gun Preacher saw Hobo With A Shotgun and thought they could do one better.”

Y’see. Kinda snazzy.

Then I watched the trailer. Pure pulp shlock like Hobo With A Shotgun this is not…

I have no doubt that this movie will make people who do mission work feel good about themselves. But I am decidedly not the audience for this picture.

I’m also skeptical how much of this “true story” holds water. What are your thoughts? Leave your comments below!

TRAILER – THE WOMAN IN BLACK

August 17th, 2011 | by Tom
Posted In: Bonus Materials

I’m not particularly a fan of horror movies, but I do love a good ghost story. Daniel Radcliffe’s first post-Harry Potter role appears to deliver in this adaptation of Susan Hill’s The Woman in Black. Take a look at the trailer below.

Sure, creepy dolls and photos with crossed out eyes are cheap horror movie tropes. The child’s narration is a little overdone, too. But I like the creeping menace in this film. That last shot in the trailer seals the deal.

Also, I never noticed until now how much Daniel Radcliffe without glasses looks like Patrick Dempsey. Is it me?

What do you think of this BONE CHILLING trailer? Leave your comments below. The Woman in Black hits theaters on February 13, 2012.

TRAILER: NEW YEAR’S EVE

July 27th, 2011 | by Tom
Posted In: Bonus Materials

To be clear, I have no interest in seeing this movie. That a trailer even exists for it 6 months out seems… ambitious at best, delusional at worst. This film is sitcom-level piffle that will be immediately forgotten two weeks after release. But humor me. Watch the trailer anyway…

These stunt-casting movies like New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day and Love, Actually that feature a cavalcade of celebrity cameos are almost becoming a genre unto themselves. They’re like the Laff-A-Lympics of cinema.

…and they must be stopped.

TRAILER – THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

July 20th, 2011 | by Tom
Posted In: Bonus Materials

Originally the word on the street was that the trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man wasn’t supposed to hit the web (ha!) until Thursday. Conventional wisdom placed it ahead of Captain America: The First Avengers when it launches in theaters on Friday.

But lo-and-behold! It’s here a day early! Enjoy!

I’ll say that the trailer hits a couple of different notes with me. Some work, some don’t.

Meeting the young Peter Parker at the beginning plays a little too much like Harry Potter to me. Then, fast forwarding a few years to the present day, we’re confronted by Andrew Garfield’s wild haystack of hair and I get a distinct Twilight vibe.

But after that, I think the trailer shapes up very nicely. Right away, you can tell that Marc Webb’s version is grounded a little more in reality. At least in terms of casting Peter as the outsider. Garfield barely even utters a line of dialogue. Mostly he keeps his head down like a beat dog. I find that kind of endearing. It’s certainly a stark contrast from widdle Tobey Maguire’s wounded puppy-dog routine in Sam Raimi’s original.

I’ll also give credit to Webb’s use of the first-person in Spider-Man’s sprint across the city rooftops.

The cynic in me could honestly have done without everything leading up to that moment in the trailer. I think if we were only give the first person shot, it would have taken the audience to catch on that we were actually seeing the city through the eyes of Spider-Man. Then, when his reflection is revealed, I think people would have gone through the roof. But maybe that’s just me.

What’s your take on this trailer?

TRAILER – THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

July 19th, 2011 | by Tom
Posted In: Bonus Materials

A whole lot of people sent me the link to the new teaser trailer for The Dark Knight Rises yesterday. So I’m a little behind the curve in terms of posting it here. But if you haven’t seen it yet, here you go.

I’m kind of turned off by “flashback” teaser trailers that splice in footage from earlier movies. I’ve seen those movies. You don’t need to remind me. Maybe it’s just me, but I’d rather look at a black screen with characters speaking dialogue from the NEW movie than look at footage from the old movie.

Then again, it is a teaser and certainly there will be more to come in the future.

I dunno. I guess I’m having a hard time getting excited about this clip. Aside from the fact that Christopher Nolan is still very much interested in architecture since Inception, this trailer tells me little else.

What was your reaction to it?
