COMMUNITY BUILDING

March 19th, 2010 | by Tom
Posted In: Blog

Hey, guys. Remember a few weeks ago when I left a post asking for your thoughts and suggestions on ways that I could establish a greater community presence here on Theater Hopper?

Well, yesterday I found an excellent article that listed 15 different plug-ins that could help me to achieve that goal. Several of them offer a level of interactivity – not only with the site – but with other visitors that I think could be very beneficial.

I have my own ideas about what plug-ins I would like to incorporate, but I would like to get your feedback and find out what features would be valuable to you. It would be very easy to go whole-hog and install ALL of these suggested plug-ins, but I want to try a slow roll out and integrate features into the site at a pace that everyone can keep up with.

Please read the article and investigate some of the plug-ins. If you could leave your comments in reply to this post, I would appreciate it!

PROMOTING COMMUNITY

March 10th, 2010 | by Tom
Posted In: Blog

I was sitting around and thinking a little bit and want to get your feedback. I’m curious as to your thoughts about the Theater Hopper “community” and if I’m doing enough to promote it or make it more visible.

Long-time readers remember the THorum community. I’ve tried to relaunch it a couple of times, but I’ve decided to give up the ghost. You can’t put lightning in a bottle twice.

That’s not to say that I’ve given up on community-building altogether. We have a stable of regular posters who leave their thoughts and opinions in the comments section of the blog. I just wonder if I’m doing enough to promote that? Maybe someone who doesn’t read the blog has an opinion about the comic, but no outlet to express it. Maybe they’re not seeing the “COMMENT” link at the bottom of each blog post.

I don’t know. I just wanted to do a little brainstorming, kick around a few ideas and see what you guys thought.

What can I do to attract more people to the comments section and are there additional avenues toward community-building that I haven’t explored?

Thanks.

WEDNESDAY’S COMIC WILL BE LATE

March 1st, 2010 | by Tom
Posted In: Blog

This is kind of unprecedented for me, but I’m going to go ahead and make the call right now – Wednesday’s comic is going to be late.

The reason for this is because I have a very important job interview on Wednesday and I don’t want to risk it by staying up late on Tuesday night working on the comic.

Normally, spending the evening working on the comic would not be an issue, but Tuesday night I also have my night class and won’t be home until late.

I’ve always made a point of having new comics here for you guys every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and you guys have rewarded me with your loyalty. For that, I can’t thank you enough.

But considering the long-term implications of this interview, I feel I can’t risk failing to bring my “A” game by staying up late Tuesday to work on a comic for Wednesday.

Wednesday’s comic will most likely be up on the site sometime later that evening. So I encourage you to check back later in the day.

You can also receive updates from my Twitter account or the Theater Hopper Facebook page.

Thanks again for your support and understanding!

SEND A PICTURE, GET 25% OFF!

February 24th, 2010 | by Tom
Posted In: Blog

Hey, guys. Real quick – I wanted to make you guys aware of a new promotion I’m running.

If you are the proud owner of ANY piece of Theater Hopper merchandise – and that can be shirts, books, posters, whatever (past and present) – take a picture of yourself and send it to me at theaterhopper@hotmail.com. If you do, I will give you a coupon code good for 25% off your next purchase in the Theater Hopper store.

I want to take the pictures and build a gallery of satisfied customers on the Theater Hopper Facebook page. I believe that if people see others enjoying their purchases, it might encourage them to shop in our store as well. Also, the 25% discount is a nice way to say “thank you” to the people who have supported the site over the years.

Incidentally, you can post your pictures directly to our Facebook page and save me a step. But either way is fine.

Thanks again for your support!

LOOK WHO’S THREE

Henry, birthday, Chuck E. Cheese

In what is quickly becoming a tradition around these parts, I wanted to take a moment to mention my son Henry. Yesterday was his birthday and he turned 3 years-old.

I don’t talk about my kids in the blog, but I like the idea of writing about them on their birthdays. I have this vision where someday my kids will Google me and read all of the dumb crap I’ve written over the years. But then they find these articles about their birthdays and think “Hmm. Maybe the old man wasn’t such a jerk after all.”

One can hope.

I’m amazed that Henry is already 3 years-old. It’s cliche, but the time slips by so fast. I imagine time will only slip away faster and faster after this.

Henry is doing well these days, but, as always, he’s a handful. He’s constantly running around, banging his shins and begging to watch one of his “shows.” These days, that either means Wow Wow Wubbzy or Chuggington.

Henry is doing very well since Pearl was added to the mix three months ago. It’s safe to say he loves his baby sister. He constantly wants to look at her, hold her and give her kisses. Sometimes we have to ask him to knock it off. Henry’s sense of personal space hasn’t really formed yet. So he thinks nothing of running up to Pearl and patting her on the head while she’s sleeping. Such is life.

The big news in our house with Henry these days is potty training. At this point, he pretty much understands the mechanics of it. He can go to the potty, drop trou, do his business, button up and wash his hands by himself. The only trick is getting his legs to listen to his brain when it tells him “Bladder full!” or “Time to poop!” Henry is often fully engaged in whatever it is that he’s doing. So asking him to stop and take a break almost always results in a tantrum.

For his big day, Cami and decided to take Henry to Chuck E. Cheese and we couldn’t have been more thrilled with his behavior. It was fun to watch him wander around and take in all the sites. He was fascinated by every game, but had no idea how any of them worked. When we asked him if he wanted to play, he’d say “No!” in a sad tone that inferred “I don’t want to miss looking around at other things.” It wasn’t until about hour 3 that he kind of settled in and started playing on all the games and rides.

Late in the evening, exhausted after playing all night, Henry looked up at me and said sweetly, “Dad? Thank you for taking me to Chwuckee Cheeze.”

You could have knocked me over with a feather.

Happy birthday, Henry. I love you, buddy.

INTERVIEWS!

February 8th, 2010 | by Tom

Something I almost forgot to mention were a pair of interviews I recently conducted for two different web sites.

The first interview I did for Comic Related took place a while ago and was held up in the publication schedule, but it’s out there now and I encourage you to check it out. It’s a podcast and my segment comes in around the :15 minute mark.

The second interview I did for Comic Attack and it’s your standard Q&A. However, I thought the interviewer – Eli Anthony – asked a lot of really good questions. Not just about Theater Hopper but about webcomics in general. So if you want my opinion about how to establish yourself in this crazy business, swing over to Comic Attack and enjoy the interview!

I just wanted to say thanks to both Comic Related and Comic Attack for getting in touch with me to conduct these interviews. I love to hear myself talk, so if you have a web site or podcast that you’d like me to contribute an interview to, I’d be happy to help. Just send me an e-mail at theaterhopper@hotmail.com and we can work out the details!

For a list of my previous press appearances, be sure to check out the Press page under the About section here on the site.

FACEBOOK GROUP

Back in the day (which was about two years ago on the internet time-line) I had a Facebook fan page. It was great, but I recently decided that I should take the Facebook thing a little more seriously. So I established a Facebook “business” page instead…

http://www.facebook.com/theaterhopper/

I’m still trying to kind of figure out the difference between the two. But the biggest difference I can determine is that status updates from this page will appear in your feed if you make yourself a fan. So it’s a really great way to stay connected to the comic and reminded of it when it updates.

I’ve been investing some time into making my new Facebook page a little more than just a bookmark on the site. So I’ve added tabs for Cast information as well as popular Story lines. I’ve gotten great feedback on these – people have been asking how I added them, so I assume people are looking at them.

The Cast information is a rehash of what’s already on the site. But the Story lines page is all new content. In fact, I plan on adding to it in the near future! So if you have any suggestions as to what story lines represent Theater Hopper the best, I would love to hear your suggestions! Feel free to leave them in the comments area below.

Of course, if you’d like to become a fan of the new Theater Hopper Facebook page, that would be cool, too.

REDDIT

January 18th, 2010 | by Tom
Posted In: Blog

Hey, guys. I’m trying to make a push for Theater Hopper through Reddit and wanted to let you know that a link to Monday’s comic can be found here. If you have a Reddit account, please give the link a few thumbs up or a comment to help it move up the list a little bit.

In the past, I would submit to Reddit’s main area with very little luck. But this time I’m testing out links to Reddit’s sub-category for comics under http://www.reddit.com/r/comics/. I think it will help to actually target people who WANT to read comics for a change.

By the way, if you submit one of Theater Hopper’s comics to Reddit’s Comics category, please let me know so I can promote the link here.

I would submit my own links to Reddit, but they’re pretty savvy about people who try to self-promote. I feel this approach kind of splits the difference between an authentic representation of word-of-mouth on your part and callous marketing on my part.

Whatever works, right?
