Gotta give a shout out to Joel Watson from Hijinks Ensue who pulled me out of bog with some great suggestions for this comic.
I was painfully stuck on an idea Sunday night and couldn’t make it work. The original set up had Jared pointing out that Thor was an American comic book about a Norse God who was portrayed by an Australian actor in a film directed by an Irishman.
And then it just kind of died on the vine. I couldn’t think of anything more. No ying to the yang, so to speak. The punchlines that I did come up with were so bad, I scarcely remember them now. I think I was trying to tie the movie to the Swedes and their reaction to their Viking heritage being co-opted by Hollywood so poorly. At one point it was going to be something like “My Chinese sneakers are more Swedish than this film.”
Yeah. It was clumsy and bad.
Joel took the original comment and kind of steered it in another direction. He also came up with some of the more clever definitions for “Aussie Washing.” My particular favorite is “The old Vegemite paint job.”
So kudos to Joel for the assist! I appreciate it, buddy! Please be sure to visit Hijinks Ensue immediately after you finish reading this blog! š
I didn’t get a chance to see Thor over the weekend because I was pretty busy with a couple of other social engagements on Friday and Saturday evening. By the time Sunday rolled around, it didn’t sound like a particularly bright idea to see Thor on Mother’s Day. I’ll probably see the film sometime tonight.
I’m looking forward to Thor, but was kind of surprised that it only did $66 million over the weekend. I guess general audiences aren’t that familiar with the character. Iron Man managed to pull down $98 million in it’s opening weekend and the only thing people talked about for months before the movie hit theaters was how obscure and unknown Iron Man was.
I guess the other thing that kind of has me wondering is the reaction I measured online this weekend. Everyone seemed to agree that Thor was entertaining – and funnier than they expected it to be – but no one seemed to be over the moon about it. Apparently is was very adequate. People didn’t have much to complain about, but they didn’t have much to celebrate, either.
Did you have a chance to see Thor over the weekend? If so, what did you think? Leave your comments below and let’s all talk about my raging xenophobia against Australians while we’re at it!
Hemsworth as Thor! Hugh Jackman as Wolverine! Geoffrey Rush as Tomar-Re!
They're Aussie Washing Hollywood!
Aussie Washing?
Giving all the good parts to Australian actors! Like when they cast Mel Gibson as Jesus in The Passion of The Christ!
Actually, I think he only directed...
AUSSIE WASHING! DOWN UNDERING! DINGOFYING! THE OLD VEGEMITE PAINT JOB!
Well, the movie is starting, so...
They're Midnight Oilin' us, man! We've been Yahoo Serioused!
KANGAROO HIJACKED!
Gotta agree, Vegemite paint job was the stand out term.
This is great. I’m going to start using some of those when ever possible. Except for Kangaroo Hijacked.
I also thought “Vegemite paint job” was hilarious, but given the colour the stuff is, also kind of icky š (and yes, I’m an Aussie, and yes I eat it from time to time)
Thor was a mediocre film that by all means is worth seeing for entertainment, but beyond that, it’s nothing inspiring. I mean, I laughed and Asgardwas freaking amazing, but there was no sense of wonder or magic. Thor is a GOD and yet when he’s on Earth creating an epic storm I’m felt so unimpressed I turned to my friend and went “that’s the climax?!”Superman’s first flight with Lois Lane is a magical cinematic experience. Spider-Man figuring out how to swing from skyscraper to skyscraper was much the same, in it’s own way. Thor regaining his powers was “well it’s about time. Now can we go back to Asgard?”
Yet I still feel it’s worth viewing if you like superhero movies. Portman is pretty good in it too.
Ugggh. That kind of sounds like a bummer.
Thor sounds like a set-up for The Avengers in the same way that Iron Man 2 was a set-up for The Avengers.
I guess what I’m saying is that The Avengers better be frickin’ amazing.
“The Old Vegemite Paint Job” sounds like a sex act.
Omg, Yahoo Serioused?! I am totally using that. Best. Line. Ever.
Dingofying. Epic.
I saw Thor, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s nothing amazing, but everyone does a great job in their parts (Chris Hemsworth in particular surprised me, since all I knew him from was Star Trek. He was great in his very important three minutes, but still). There’s humor and incredible action scenes, and I really liked it. Set up to the Avengers? Yeah. Worth the price of a movie ticket? HELL YEAH.
Besides, the movie has frakking Anthony Hopkins as Odin. ANTHONY HOPKINS.
You DO know Mel Gibson’s actually American, right?
I do. But does Jared? Remember, he thought he played Jesus.
(that was a close one)
Joel Watson! that would certainly explain why I actually laughed at one of your comics
Thanks, friend.
Whatta pal.
As an Aussie, while I think the various Ozphobic terminology was genius, I have to say a few Aussies taking hero roles is hardly an invasion. Besides, if the Americans couldn’t find someone suitably man-tastic for the role of Thor, that’s really more a reflection on the diminishment of the Amercan physique. š
As for the film, I saw it a couple of weeks ago, and thought it was great fun. Not exactly Shakespeare, but a genuinely fun romp. Plus, as a comic book nerd, I enjoyed all the little references.
Ooo! Them’s fightin’ words!
Alright, I’ll see your pudgy American leading man and raise you one Russell Crowe.
Yeah, I know he’s a kiwi, but I’ll take what I can get!
Yeah, Russ is a bit of a tub o’ lard these days, plus he’s a tool. But he hasn’t done the super hero thing, so he doesn’t count.
So, as a return shot, I offer 5 words: Ben Frickin’ Affleck as Daredevil.
‘Nuff said. š
Thor was about as good as a movie about interdimensional, space fairies can be.
Where’s the “like” button on this thing? Brilliant!
Glad I could add something to the conversation. š
Aussie washing? *lol* Surprised he’s also not complaining about the fact that Batman’s played by a Welshman while Superman and Spider-man are played by Brits.
I for one loved Thor. I thought Chris Helmsworth played him perfectly and the Warriors 3 were also done quite well. There was plenty of action mixed with the right amount of humour. I also just loved Stan Lee’s scene.
Then final two in the last panel are my favorite.
That makes me feel good because those last two were mine.
I’m not a complete fraud after all!!
Hoodwinked, bamboozled! We didn’t land on Mjolnir, Mjolnir landed on us!
