I receieved an interesting e-mail from Shane “Smikwily” McWilliams in regard to Raiders of the Lost Ark and why one should not look into The Ark of the Covenant. Apparently, it’s actually mentioned in The Bible! Not being a Christian scholar, I always figured it to be Hollywood tacking on a solution that seemed to fit the situation a little too easily, but I guess I was wrong. Here’s Steve’s e-mail:
I did a little digging for something to back this up. I remember hearing this when I was younger, but had a hard time finding an actual page to back it up. I did understand the reasoning for looking away from the ark as it was opened.
1 Samuel 6:19
But God struck down some of the men of Beth Shemesh, putting seventy of them to death because they had looked into the ark of the Lord. The people mourned because of the heavy blow the Lord had dealt them.
2 Samuel 2:6-7 (also 1 Chr 13:7-10)
He and all his men set out from Baalah of Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the Name, the name of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim that are on the ark. They set the ark of God on a new cart and brought it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart with the ark of God on it, and Ahio was walking in front of it. David and the whole house of Israel were celebrating with all their might before the Lord , with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, sistrums and cymbals.
When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down and he died there beside the ark of God.

Remember, most of the Trilogy deals with Christian artifacts, so I’m sure Indy knew all the details going in.
I never was one to doubt Indiana Jones and his level of research. He always seemed like of of the most competent, composed and, most importantly HUMAN action hero in modern cinema. I guess I just underestimated Hollywood’s ability to inject secular history into mainstream cinema and retain some level of truth.
Show Shane your appreciation for his research by visiting his site http://www.playmoreconsoles.com/

Last weekend was nothing short of a movie-watching frenzy for my wife and me. On Friday, we saw School of Rock which she kept calling School House Rock. However you’d like to refer to it, it was good. It’s refreshing to know that Richard Linklater can make another fun movie after such heady fare as Waking Life. Not that I didn’t like that movie, it’s just that I get migraines whenever I think about it.
On Saturday, we saw Intolerable Cruelty. Although I liked it, I stopped thinking about it by the time I got home. The movie was full of close-ups of George Clooney and Catherine Zeta Jones. Their beauty only reminded us in the audience how unattractive we really are, except my wife; she’s hot.
Saturday nights are meant for parties, bar mitzvahs, and discos. So of course it would make sense that we watched Philadelphia. The movie was an early birthday gift from my mother-in-law. I’m not exactly sure what it is about me that made her think of Philadelphia, but it was a very sweet gesture and she’s one of the sweetest people I know. The movie made me want to buy those action figures that they advertised on SNL. Where can I get those?
And yesterday we saw Kill Bill. Tom’s description did it justice so I won’t go into it. I just want to say that I’m glad Erin, the love of my life, is cool enough to see that movie with me. Not only that, she didn’t want to leave in the middle, when the going got bloody, like the female half of the couple next to us did. Yes, I picked a good one.

By the way, if the thought has crossed your mind, you should really consider getting your name on the Theater Hopper Walk of Fame. We’ve already had four people donate – Brian Carroll, Cale Block, Mari Clayton and Ryan Thomsen – since the walk became open for business earlier in the week. It’s pretty wild.
If you’d like to see your name immortalized forever, just check out the Walk of Fame page and donate whatever you think is fair! There is no set level to meet in order to be included on the walk. If you have a web site you’d like me to link your name to, let me know and I’ll make it happen!
For those of you who came back to the site this weekend, I have a special post-Halloween treat for you! If you vote for Theater Hopper on buzzComix, you’ll get to see a very special Halloween piece of art I whipped up just for you! Consider it a reward for supporting Theater Hopper.
It’s really important to me that Theater Hopper breaks into the Top 10 over at buzz before Monday. I believe strongly that if we can get to that level by then, we have a really good chance of STAYING there for the rest of the month. Be sure to remember that if you vote today, you can come back and vote again tomorrow… and the day after that… and EVERY day! Just one simple click does more to help this site than you may realize, so please vote!
I think you’ll be really pleased with the extra artwork that I put together. I tried coloring it a little differently than I do the regular strip, so you can see if that’s something you would enjoy down the road. Could it be an indication of an evolution in my artistic style? You’ll have to vote to find out! And if you like it, let me know what you think in the forums!
Thanks again to everyone for their help! I’m lucky to have one of the friendliest and most generous fan bases is web comics. Thanks again!

Last night, I attended a screening of Born Into This, a documentary about writer Charles Bukowski. The fact that I was one of three hundred people crammed into the sold-out theater at 10:00 pm on a Sunday shows the scope of his grasp.
Reading Bukowski is like getting hit in the head with a beer bottle – sentence after sentence. Few writers say what they mean like he does. You won’t find flowery, prosaic sputtering or insignificant details, you’ll only read as many words as it takes to tell a story. The magic of Bukowski is that no matter how few words he used, his writing crackles with poetry.
The film is composed of interviews with Bukowski, family, and friends between 1972 and the early 1990’s. he most surprising thing is how gentle he seems. His calm, smooth voice and laid back manner are a direct contradiction to his wino-lifestyle, pockmarked face, and stories of barroom fights and barroom women.
Bukowski lived hard, but he also had a hard life. One of the most powerful scenes is where he visits the home of his childhood, a childhood he refers to as “A horror story with a capital H.” He stands in the bathroom, nervously drinking a Heinneken, and explains how that was where his father beat him with a leather strap five nights a week for six years.
Normally, you wouldn’t consider a movie where the protagonist dies at the end to be a feel-good film, but when Bukowksi died in 1994, he was happy. Born Into This serves as a fitting tribute to whom Bukowski’s publisher referred to as, “A Whitman of the street.”

Theater Hopper reader and Tupac Shakur fan Matt passed along an interesting link for all you Tupac conspiracy buffs out there:
http://www.tupacfans.com/alive.php
I found the revelations very interesting. Particularly Tupac fascination with the 16th century Italian philosopher Machiavelli and the number 7.
Incidentally, the movie Tupac: Resurrection was released 7 years after Tupac died. Food for thought.
Those of you who know me know that I am SERIOUS Henry Rollins fan. Well, guess who is going to see him do a spoken word this evening at 8:00 PM. THAT’S RIGHT! It’s me!
I’m pretty pumped about it. Hell, I’m always pumped when Henry comes to town. He’s been making annual appearances in these parts for the last few years. I’m trying to decide if I’m going to try and get a picture with him. I have one of him and me from 1997. It’d be nice to get an upgrade.
Suspiciously, there are only two spoken word dates listed on Rollins’ web site. Tonight in Ames, Iowa and tomorrow in Decatur, Illinois. I like to think that he’s making a special trip just to see me.
I’ll let you know how it goes.
