After suffering through winter, days without sunlight and overcast skies, now I finally have a single day to pour my frustrations into.
The story about January 24 being the most depressing day of the year is actually a real thing. I guess this is what happens when psychologists have too much time on their hands. They figure out ways to determine which days suck most by contrasting different variables such as weather, debt and motivation levels. "Time since Christmas" is actually another one of these variables, which I think says all that needs to be said about the validity of this research. Wouldn’t this variable automatically exclude 2/3rds of the world’s pouplation? How about "Time since Rosh Hashanah?" Seems only fair if you want to be thorough.
Personally, this time of year is depressing for me because theaters become a dumping ground for the movies that couldn’t make a big enough impression to compete with all the Oscar hopefully that flood theaters at the end of the year. Seeing a remake of When A Stranger Calls or Big Momma’s House 2 cluttering up screens doesn’t surprise me. But what has really bummed me out is that the remake of The Pink Panther is being dumped in February as well.
I know in my heart of hearts that there is NO WAY this remake is going to be any good. For one, you just aren’t going to top Peter Sellers. I’m sorry, you can’t. Not even if you’re Steve Martin. And I LOVE Steve Martin. Second, Beyonce Knowles is a co-star. Not a good sign. I like the fact that Kevin Kline is playing Inspector Dreyfus. Jean Reno is a good casting choice as well. But if I had a Magic Eight Ball and asked it if The Pink Panther was going to be any good, I have a strong feeling that it would respond with "All Signs Point To ‘No’."
It probably doesn’t help that the movie has been pushed back TWICE away from it’s original Summer 2005 launch date, either.
Not much else to say. I was about to mention the sale going on in the store again, but you guys already know that there’s only a week left to take advantage of the reduced prices, don’t you? February 6 is the cutoff date.
Let’s talk about something else for a minute. Like perhaps my MySpace profile!
I know for a fact that MySpace is kind of pointless, so don’t send me e-mails trying to make me aware of that fact. But I’ve run into a lot of really cool people through the service. People that are perhaps more casual (though no less enthusiastic fans) that I might not otherwise cross paths with. Maybe they’re too busy to join the THorum or too intimidated to send an e-mail. If that’s the case, go to your MySpace account and ask to be added to my friends list. You know I’ll say yes!
By the way, I hope this doesn’t offend the Google Gods, but I need a little help understand AdSense. I think I’m doing it wrong and Google FAQs aren’t helping me out very much. If you have any expertise, will you please send me an e-mail?
Also, I’m trying to feel my way around Search Engine Optimization for the site. I kind of feel like I’ve reached the point where advertising and link exchanges are only going to do so much for traffic, so I’m trying to grow in different ways. Again, if you have any suggestions, please send me an e-mail. Thanks!
Remember that fun Frappr map thing from a while ago? Well, it’s sort of like that. Totally informal. I just want to see who’s alive and kickin’ out there!
Sorry for the delay with today’s blog. I was having computer troubles for most of the morning and early afternoon. I’ll catch up with you soon.
I couldn’t really think of a concept for incentive artwork that matched today’s comic. Plus, yesterday was Super Bowl Sunday and I kind of had to slap this comic together late in the evening. Can you tell?
At any rate, I thought I would share with you some artwork that is maybe… 80% complete. It’s a new t-shirt design that I’m putting together that features Truman. It’s a parody of the MGM Studios title card. You know the one with the lion inside a circle of film? Anyway, I hope to have that for sale along with another design very soon.
Speaking of shirts, everyone needs to know that today is the LAST DAY to take advantage of our sale going on in the store. All t-shirts are $9.99 and all baby-doll tees are $14.99. We sold our last hoodie, thank goodness. So those are off the market now.
The sale will conclude at 11:59 PM tonight, so this is your last chance to take advantage of prices you’ll likely not see again anytime soon!
In regards to the comic, I don’t knoy if any of you guys saw When A Stranger Calls this weekend. I guess it did pretty well at the box office – $22 million. I have no need to see it. I’m not a big fan of horror in the first place. But if you catch me and my mood is right, I’ll watch it. That said, I don’t know if the producers did themselves any favors by dumbing things down to get a PG-13 rating. I could be wrong. If you saw it, let us know about it in the THorum.
I don’t mean to be cruel regarding Camilla Belle’s eyebrows. Truthfully, she’s very attractive. There’s nothing wrong with them. I’m not trying to shoehorn her into some standardized conceptualization of beauty.
However, at the same time, it’s a distinctive look. It’s certainly the first thing I noticed about the trailers for the movie and the commercials that ran on TV. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Take a look!

I think that eybrow is thicker than my pinky finger!
Okay, okay. I’m being cruel again. Sorry, Camilla!
Let’s just rack it up as another example of Theater Hopper’s committment to eyebrow-related entertainment.
Cheers!
People you have NO IDEA how long this joke has been percolating. I think I came up with it months ago – on Twitter, naturally.
I don’t know why, but the term “retweeted” also kind of had this ominous tone to me. This, despite the fact that I seem to spend an inordinate amount of time coming up with pithy one-liners to achieve exactly that designation.
But, y’know, think about it. Big, booming voice like James Earl Jones bellowing at you – “YOU’VE BEEN RETWEETED!” It would kind of shake you up a little, wouldn’t it?
Something else I’ll tell you, figuring out the logo for this fake movie took a lot longer than I thought it would! I guess I’m a stickler for these things. Although, in retrospect, a Twitter bird in a pool of blood is maybe a little on the nose.
And by the way, I’m completely aware of the anachronism of having a girl talk into an phone with a cord on it when I’m proselytizing for a horror movie about technology.
Not much else to say about the comic except that I hope you enjoyed it. But I will bring a couple of other issue to the fore:
- I introduced a couple of new features to the comment area including giving you the ability to give a thumbs up/thumbs down to comments AND uploading images or files into the comment thread. Hopefully this will help promote greater conversation with the comics. Let me know how that works out for you!
- I wanted to remind everyone that you can now buy prints of your favorite Theater Hopper comics. Just look for the “Buy Print” button in the comic navigation to submit your order. All comics are printed on 8.5 x 11″ cardstock and are signed by me. For $5.00 you can have a piece of Theater Hopper mailed to you in a re-enforced envelope. It’s a pretty good deal!
- Lastly, there’s a conversation happening on the Theater Hopper Facebook page that I would like you to participate in. Recently, I got the wild idea to do a children’s book about manners at the movie theater. This project would likely use Theater Hopper characters in a different context and I think the idea has legs. The twist is that the kid already knows how to behave, but comments on the things ADULTS do that are inconsiderate. At any rate, I’d like your feedback on it and if you’re not following Theater Hopper on Facebook, maybe gimme a little “Like” action. We’re 6 followers away from 1,000 and I’d like to pass that mark sometime before I die. You could be a part of history!
Anyway, that’s all I have for right now. Thanks for checking out the comic. Don’t forget the ShareThis plug in at the bottom of the blog to share the comic through your social networks! Facebook it, Twitter it, Google+ it – Heck! Even e-mail it! Everything you do to spread the word helps.
Have a great week everyone!
