First off, I’ve gotta give credit where credit is due. Cami helped brainstorm the idea for today’s strip, so – thank you honey!
I knew I wanted to make some mention of John Cusack since his new film Identity opens today and I’m a big fan. I just wasn’t sure how to go about it.
I was playing around with the whole “I gave her my heart, she gave (stole) me a pen” line from Say Anything and a joke about how it seems like there is always at least one scene in each John Cusack movie where our hero is standing out in the rain.
It happened in Say Anything. It happens twice in High Fidelity. I think it even happens once after he gets spit out onto the New Jersey Turnpike in Being John Malkovich. What, is this guy some kind of amphibian? Is he half mud-skipper, or something. I’m beginning to think he has a clause built somewhere into his contract. Either that, or a gill sac that needs moistening between takes.
I only mention it because, from the trailer, it would appear that Mr. Cusack spends considerable time in the rain. Here we go again.
I would really like to see Identity, based solely on my affection for Cusack as an actor. He’s probably my favorite contemporary A-lister. In his teenage years, he projected the same confidence underlined by nervousness aura that I felt very in tune with. As an adult, he comes across as a self-assured individual with a certain cocky charm – the kind of man I would like to be. I see a lot of myself in him, although we’re nothing alike. In my opinion, he’s certainly more “everyman” than Tom Hanks, or whoever.
That said, I don’t think we’ll see the picture. Cami and I just aren’t the “scary movie” couple. We prefer to rent films from that genre instead of seeing them in the theater. If it gets too scary – pause.
Poster sales are chugging along and I have you to thank. Well, 30 of you at least. Still, for one week, I think that’s pretty good.
If you’re thinking about buying a poster, I don’t suggest procrastinating. These are nice posters. I think you will be very pleased with their quality.
After this poster business is over, I’m thinking about bringing back the forum. Seeing the kind of support I’m seeing from the sale makes me feel that it may be time to cultivate a community and give you guys a place to put down some roots.
Seriously, I think I have the most complimentary readership in all web comics. Maybe I’m not controversial enough to illicit that kind of negative response, but regardless, I feel damn lucky to have one good fan – let alone the several that have stepped forward in the last week.
Thanks.
YOU’RE GONNA NEED A BIGGER DRILL BIT FOR THAT…

So the full media assault for The Matrix Reloaded is in full swing. After spending months intentionally trying to save myself from any plot points, the coverage for the movie is unavoidable.
It’s on the cover of Time (where I guess they let some major plot points slip) and all over television. Everywhere from MTV, to E!, Access Hollywood – hell, I think even Dateline did 30 minutes on it this Sunday! It looks like I’ll be spending the rest of the week running around with my fingers in my ears yelling “LA, LA, LA, LA, LA! I CAN’T HEAR YOU!”
Still, despite the onslaught, I can’t contain my excitement for the film. I remember back in ’99 when Cami and I saw it with a bunch of friends. We both thought it was going to suck. That may sound blasphemous now, but think about Keanu Reeves’ record with sci-fi films. Remember Johnny Mnemonic? On second thought, don’t.
So, yeah. Look how right we were.
Expect nothing less than a week of strips relating to the new Matrix offering. It’s my duty.
Speaking of duty, I’ve taken the liberty to decrease the file sixes on some of the supporting images around the site. I was saving some of these files as .jpg when I could have gotten away with .gif. Most of these images aren’t even above 64 colors. It’s not a huge improvement, but hopefully the site will load a little faster. The background, which was around 33k has been trimmed back to 13k. You can barely detect the difference.
Of course, none of this will mean anything to you if you aren’t a web designer. But hopefully the site will load a little faster.
Two more things I’ll mention:
1.) I currently have another guest strip floating around over at Briworld to help him close out his last week of the strip. If you want to see it, you’ll have to go here. I guess Brian mentioned that his girlfriend is totally in love with Theater Hopper. I guess she must have received my bribe!
2. Your voting put us over the top this weekend and we’ve trumped No Pants Tuesday on the Top Web Comics Top 150 list. It’s a friendly rivalry, by the way. Zachary and I aren’t mad at each other, or anything.
But if you could twist the knife, that would be great! 🙂

Working on this week’s comic and I’l almost done. It’s another extended strip. I seem to have forgotten how to write four panel comics. Then again, I’m not really writing jokes at this point – it’s all story. So I tend to go on a little bit. Oddly, though, I’m not using and dialogue. Chalk that up to it featuring Victor.
I promise there will be lots of action after this week’s comic. So stay tuned for that!
In the meantime, please enjoy this guest strip from Jesse Kiefer. Jesse writes a comic called Tank-Monkey that you should really check out. If you like monkeys and you like tanks, Jesse pretty much has you covered!
I thought his guest comic was appropriately sweet and actually very close to a strip I planned on doing later on feature Truman.
People keep asking me if we’ll see Truman before it’s all over and I calmly reassure them, “Yes, he will be back.”
It’s one of the great mysteries of my “career” how much people love Truman. I get requests for comics with him in them all the time. I can’t figure it out. He doesn’t do much. Mostly just sits there. We’ll, accept for that time he piloted a bi-plane, which Jesse cunningly references the fourth panel of his comic. You can see that what he’s referring to here. In fact, here are the other two Truman comics he references: “Sexybark” and “Legally Stoked.”
People used to love that gag with Truman in a purse. That drawing was actually one of our first t-shirts back in 2003! Wow, man. Time flies.
One parallel between Truman and Theater Hopper I can think of is how close both came into my life. We brought Truman home in April of 2002. I started Theater Hopper a few months later in August. So, in many ways, he grew up with the comic. I know I wrote my fair share of blog posts about him. Maybe that’s why he resonates with fans? You grew to love him the same time I did? It’s kind of cool when you think about it.
At any rate, that’s it for today. Thanks again to Jesse for the very sweet guest comic and everyone be sure to visit Tank-Monkey. It’s got tanks, it’s got monkeys… DOOOOO IT.
By the by, if you’d like to contribute to the fun, I’m still looking for guest strips to put up on the site. Feel free to chip in by sending your comics to theaterhopper@hotmail.com. They need to be 525 pixels wide, JPEG format and relatively free of obscenities. Nothing your Mom would be embarrassed about. If you’re down for that and would enjoy a moderate bump in traffic as Theater Hopper ends its run, we’d love to have you!
Until then, hang tight and stay tuned for a new comic tomorrow!
