SKETCH – FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER

As you probably guessed, today’s sketch is in celebration of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, in theater’s today. At this point I’ve pretty much given up any justification as to why I feel the need to see this movie. I’m a comic book nerd. I need to stop apologizing for it. Because I was considerate of other individuals tastes in movies, I totally missed out on seeing The Punisher and Ghost Rider in theaters. Yeah, I know. I probably didn’t miss much. But it’s the principal, you know? Stick with your team. It’s probably the reason so many people voted for Bush in 2004. Just out of habit…
My original sketch was supposed to have the entire Fantastic Four in a groups shot. Since he’s the most awesome, I drew The Thing first. Then, as I got to thinking about it, the one aspect I love most about the Fantastic Four is the ribbing that The Thing and The Human Torch give each other. In the comics, it’s merciless and in the first movie, it was actually one of the few things that they got right! So I put my focus on these two and left The Invisible Woman and Mr. Fantastic out of it. Their dynamic never really interested me much.
Above the two is The Silver Surfer flying out of frame. Originally, I needed something to fill in some white space, but I really like how it turned out. I think I was able to capture one of his poses with only a few lines and that’s a good feeling.
Commercials for the new movie are everywhere right now. I can’t turn on a TV without seeing one. I think it was all over MySpace yesterday. And even though Jessica Alba still looks like a man (seriously, I saw her Adam’s Apple!) and some of the TV spots are showing Galactus-as-a-cloud, I’m psyched to see it.
I mentioned on Wednesday on how Cami is letting me off my leash and how I’m seeing it by myself. I think we figured out how. I would have felt guilty to leave her and Henry alone on Saturday or Sunday during the day and especially during the evening. I probably wouldn’t even be able to enjoy the movie because I would be paranoid that Henry would say his first word, or something, while I was away. It would probably be “deadbeat,” or something similarly heartbreaking.
So I suggested that I go to the late-late show on Friday night. We typically put Henry to bed around 10:00. Once he’s down for the night, I’ll sneak out of the house to hang out with a couple hundred nerds for two hours and then slink back into bed while Cami is still asleep.
I don’t mean to make a big deal out of seeing a movie alone. I’m an only child, so doing stuff by myself isn’t alien to me. But with movies… well, for Cami and I, it’s been the nucleous of our relationship for almost 13 years. So it’s just weird when I go to one without her. There’s a chance I might go with my sister-in-law. I think Cami told me she was interested. But probably because she just moved into a new townhome and wants to get away from painting for a few hours. I’ll have to confirm that.
All the same, it’s probably for the best Cami isn’t going. She’d probably be too distracted by Alba’s hairy knuckles to enjoy the movie anyway.
Have a great weekend, everyone!
I have to be honest with you. I had no idea what I was going to do for a sketch today. Evan Almighty failed to inspire and the only other quasi-high profile movie this week is 1408 – which seems to be on NO ONE’S radar screens.
So, I came up with this!
He’s the movie ninja and, as you can see, instead of throwing shuriken, he throws movie reels. DANGEROUS! It was an idea I had for a shirt that I would probably polish up if was actually going to produce it. As things stand, I’m still waiting for Movie Law #948 to come back from the printer. So we’ll see how that one sells before I introduce a new design.
By the way, you can still place an order for Movie Law #948. The pre-order is complete, but it gave me a sense of what the demand will be. So I should have enough in all sizes.
Actually, I have another idea in mind to produce before this one. But if you think it might fly, tell me what you think of the movie ninja in the comments below!
I don’t really have a lot of movie stuff to talk about today, so I thought I would tip you off to a great contest surrounding the DVD release of the movie 300 on July 31. I know that’s a ways off for the DVD, but I wanted to give everyone first crack at the contest.
Visit the website http://www.JoinThe300.com and enter for a chance to win a trip to the San Diego Comic Con to compete for a chance to visit the set of 300’s director Zach Snyder’s next big project – Watchmen!
If you’re a comic book nerd like I am, this is a big deal. So toss your hat into the ring. Even if you don’t win the grand prize, there are other giveaways including signed mini-posters, iPod shuffles and 300 copies of the DVD.
I’m working right now on getting a review copy of 300 so I can tell you guys all about the special features of the two-disc collectors edition. If there was a movie ripe for extra content, 300 would be it. This will probably be the biggest DVD release of the summer, so I’m really looking forward to it.
That about does it for me. But check back later in the day. I want to share with you some artwork I’ve created for my good friends over at Juice – where Theater Hopper is run in regional syndication each week. It’s art for a coloring contest! That doesn’t happen every day! I’m really proud of how it turned out and I want to share it with you.
Stay tuned for more!
For the first time in a few weeks, I don’t have a movie review to share with you guys on a Monday. For some of you this is probably a welcome relief. For others, maybe somewhat jarring.
Movies weren’t in the cards for Cami and I this weekend. Henry came down with his first illness – an eye and ear infection – and we had a couple of rough nights. He’s been to his doctor and he’s on antibiotics now. When I left the house, he was all smiles and bouncing like crazy in his bouncy seat. So, it’s all good.
Of course, even if Henry were well, I doubt we would have made any plans. Evan Almighty was number one at the box office this weekend, but it’s $30 million take in the fact of it’s $250 million budget pretty much categorizes it as a bomb. Surprisingly, 1408 took a huge chunk out of it’s potential take by grabbing $20 million on it’s own. So I guess I was wrong in my assessment last week that the film was on no one’s radar.
On Wednesday, Live Free or Die Hard comes out and that’s what today’s sketch is in honor of. More specifically, me as a generic action hero. I have some strong opinions about LFoDH, but I think I’ll reserve them for Wednesday. As I alluded to last week, I might start upping production of the comic to twice a week with one comic on Wednesday and the other on Friday. I think I’m going to kick that off this week. So, you have that to look forward to!
Come back later today for an announcement regarding tonight’s Triple Feature talkcast and news about a brand new contest you can participate in!
Hey, guys. Sorry – no big blog post today. I stayed up late Saturday night getting a comic ready for later this week since I will be out of town for a few days on a business trip.
I’ll try to come back and write some more tonight. But between packing and our weekly broadcast of The Triple Feature talk cast tonight at 9:00 PM CST, I probably won’t have time. So check out the show tonight if you want my opinions on this week’s big release – Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix. I’m sure Joe and Gordon will have opinions, too. “PING!”
I know my sketch of Harry sucks gillyweed, but I think I can get a pass on my Snape. He’s the most interesting character in the series to me anyway. I don’t care if they’re drawing back his screen time from movie to movie. Alan Rickman should have his own reality show where he reads the phone book or the menu at Chinese take-out places. I could listen to him talk for hours.
I might be able to drop more of a note once I’m holed up in my hotel room after all-day meetings, bored out of my skull and missing Cami and Henry terribly. But for now, this is what I can spare.
Apologies for the lack of content. Hopefully thing will level out soon!
