After I drew today’s comic, I was a little bit lost as to what incentive sketch I should throw together that tied in with it. Then, looking back at the first panel, it kind of hit me and, well, this was the result.
Why is Goth Jared such a happy Goth? Because he feels so AWESOME!
After a summer of nearly no romantic comedy releases, Cami is suffering withdrawal and is jonesing for a fix. To that end, she is supremely excited for Just Like Heaven. I have to say that I agree. I am also very excited for this movie.
Sweet Home Alabama excluded (I thought it was cloying, regional hucksterism – trying to net that “NASCAR Dad” dollar), I greatly enjoy Reese Witherspoon in romantic comedies. She seems smart and winning and I think she’s fun to watch.
I’m also quite fond of Mark Ruffalo, who is charming in every film he appears in. His performance was the only thing redeeming about 13 Going On 30 and I like that he’s able to switch things up. His role as Detective Fanning in Collateral was also satisfying. To me, he’s an actor that’s pretty much good in any genre even if the film around him is total crap. He’s the next John Cusack without all of the “boombox-over-the-head” romanticism in his background.
Of course, the big news about this movie is that it’s the first post-Napoleon Dynamite role for fro-less Jon Heder. Gotta admit I’m suckered by his trailer closing line delivery of “I’m ninety-nine percent ∗parched∗ right now. I could sure use a ∗co-la∗.” What can I say? I’m easily amused. It’ll be interesting to see if he can trump such an instantly identifiable and unique character like Napoleon.
Not much news right now except I know there are a handful of you out there waiting for me to deliver a few shirts. I’m getting to it! Haven’t forgotten you.
I’m steering myself toward a sea change in my life right now and I’m kind of doing some stuff to put me on firm ground, mentally speaking. I’m making a couple of changes to my habits and routines. So hopefully I can kind of fold it into a pattern that allows me to be a little more productive while being a little less exhausted.
I’m looking forward to it.
Oh – I’m still looking for some programming help with the site. Mostly archive functions. So if any of you out there have experience with PHP or maybe even databases, please contact me!
27 Dresses comes out this weekend and I’m probably going to end up seeing it. The film has been on Cami’s radar for a while.
I actually remember kind of being excited about it when I frist heard about it sometimes last fall. At that point, Katherine Heigl could do no wrong. I thought she was awesome in Knocked Up and I was looking forward to seeing her in another movie.
Of course, since then, she’s been talking a lot of smack and saying stupid things like how Knocked Up was sexist and how her character on Grey’s Anatomy has been written so poorly this season (yours and everyone else’s, sister!) It all comes off like a bunch of whining to me. It’s not professional and it makes me kind of dislike her. I know that’s superficial, but when you only have so much time over any given weekend and only so much money in your wallet, you’ll leverage any decision making you can wrap your mind around. I mean, what actress wouldn’t kill to trade places with her at this stage in her career.
I guess it will be interesting to see if she can carry a picture by herself. She may have been the female lead in Knocked Up, but that movie was most certainly not about her. I guess even if she sucks, I’m looking forward to seeing James Marsden on screen again so soon after knocking it out of the park in Enchanted. That dude was the best thing about that movie.
I’ve always liked Marsden even if he comes off like the thinking-man’s Casper Van Dien. I don’t particularly hold him accountable to the fact that he’s always the guy being dumped in movies. After all, there are actors who seemingly die in every other role they take. It’s just jarring to see him in this different context. I hope it pans out for him. He deserves more.
Actually, the fact that he’s always getting dumped in the movies might be the one great thing that will instantly draw audiences to him – sympathize with him. I mean, for once, shouldn’t the guy get the girl?
On thing’s for sure – they’ve been running advanaced screenings of this movie for a while now trying to build word of mouth. I think it screened once in December before the holidays and it was screened again for general audiences last Saturday. My sister-in-law went and she said she liked it. My good friend Joe Dunn from Joe Loves Crappy Movies saw it and liked it, too.
Joe made the point that the movie was formulaic, but that it didn’t count as a strike against it because it’s been very compitently arranged. Not every movie has to deliver a brand new experience. Some films take a tried and true formula and do great things with it by telling a story in simple terms. There’s nothing wrong with it. In fact, that’s what makes these formulas tried and true to begin with. Done right, they simply work.
27 Dresses has that vernier going into the film. I’ll be eager to see if it delivers on that promise.
That’s it for me today. I’m sneaking out of the house later tonight to see Cloverfiled. Actually, all three members of The Triple Feature are planning on seeing Cloverfield this weekend, so we’ll have plenty to talk about on next Monday’s show.
Have a great weekend and I’ll see you here on Monday!
I realize that I’m really getting ahead of myself with this comic – Love Happens doesn’t open until September 18 – but the dialogue in today’s comic was taken nearly verbatim from a conversation Cami and I had this evening and I couldn’t shake it. So, there you go. A little slice of life from the Brazelton house on a Tuesday night.
Cami had me sit down to watch the season premier of Flipping Out last night and Bravo was incessantly running commercials for Love Happens in between Jeff Lewis’s hissy fits. I thought it seemed strange that they were advertising what essentially looks like a direct-to-DVD release so early. I mean, the movie is a month away! But I suppose it was effective because I hadn’t heard word-one about this movie until last night.
IMDB breaks down the plot thusly:
About a widower whose book about coping with loss turns him into a best-selling self-help guru. On a business trip to Seattle, he falls for a woman who attends one of his seminars, only to learn that he hasn’t yet truly confronted his wife’s passing.
But the advertisement sums things up pretty succinctly…
Jennifer Aniston is unlucky in love. Aaron Eckhart helps millions, but can’t help himself. LOVE CONNECTION! Happy ending. Go home.
There. I just saved you eight bucks.
I wasn’t lying, though, when I said I would see the movie for Aaron Eckhart. In my opinion, after The Dark Knight and Thank You For Smoking, the man can do no wrong.
I’m not really excited about the idea of seeing Jennifer Aniston in ANOTHER romantic comedy where she’s unlucky in love. She’s America’s poster girl for failed relationships. I see enough of that on magazine racks and on E! News. Now you’re going to ask me to sit through it for 2 hours?
Aniston is a reasonably talented actress. I wish someone would cast her in something where the plot is not driven by romantic entanglements. She should make a cameo appearance in some other movie where she swears like a sailor and punches someone out just to mix things up a little bit.
That’s just my opinion. I could be wrong.
HEY! By the way, I reviewed the Blu-ray release of I Love You, Man here on the site yesterday. Hit the little back arrow to check it out if you missed it.
Other than that, I think I’m just going to hang around and dream about Aaron Eckhart’s jaw line. I mean!… Eat beef jerky and watch ESPN! Yeah! Sportscenter! It’s on right now!!
Later.
Earlier this week I was exposed to the trailer for the forthcoming romantic comedy Friends With Kids. I haven’t posted it until now because I’ve kind of confused by it.
On the one hand, the movie is stuffed to the gills with actors I love including Kristen Wiig, Adam Scott, Maya Rudolph, Jon Hamm and Chris O’Dowd. But the trailer positively reeks of plot contrivances and romantic comedy tropes that usually only attract the likes of Katherine Heigl.
In other words, it looks dumb and I think I kind of hate it?
Watch for yourself.
Truthfully, I don’t even think you need to see the movie now. The trailer pretty much gave it all away.
Also, what the hell happened to Jennifer Westfeldt? She was an adorable chipmunk in Kissing Jessica Stein. Now she looks like she’s been wrapped in plastic.
