I knew at some point I wanted Tom’s fantastic story to be uncovered as a lie. In terms of bringing David “back,” it was really the best of both worlds. I got to dust off an old character without actually keeping him in continuity.
It was also a great way to cover any gaps in logic there might be. People asked pretty early on how Shia could possibly mistake Tom for Jared when they’ve never even met. Frankly, I never thought that was something that would come up. I should have my characters lie more often! It’s the perfect catch-all solution!
I realize that the punchline to today’s comic is kind of “hur-hur,” but the great thing about it is that it was something literally said by real-life Jared after I posted to my Facebook page about my adventures in the ER. At the time, I kind of groaned at the pun. But now I appreciate it for what it is. Thanks, good buddy!
Not much else for me to talk about today except if you’re trying to find Monday’s recording of The Triple Feature, we had to scrap the show. Joe had to back out for personal reasons and that left us at a disadvantage. Joe and Gordon were going to talk about 500 Days of Summer but I haven’t seen it yet because it doesn’t come out in theaters here until Friday. No offense to Gordon, but it would be kind of a boring show if he was the only one talking about the movie (and I think he’d be the first to agree with me on that point.)
The other thing I’ll mention is that my good friend Zach Miller from Joe and Monkey found the floor map for Chicago Comic Con so now you’ll know where to find us on Artist Alley. Zach and I will be sharing table #3414 and we’ll be standing right next to our friend Joe Dunn and the rest of the Digital Pimp Crew at table #3416.
If you’d like to view the map, you can do so here.
Chicago Comic Con is being held at the Rosemont Convention Center in Rosemont, IL August 6 – 9. If you’re in the area, please stop by our booth. It would be a thrill to meet you and I’m giving out free buttons!
Until then, stay frosty!
You have no idea how long I’ve kept that terrible pun in my back pocket. I don’t care if it isn’t original. I wasn’t going to pass up using it!
I think this might be the first time in since, well… ever that I’ve had a comic up and running while I’m away at a convention. Usually I have a string of guest strips lined up for you. But I figured since I made such a big deal about the 7th anniversary and the 1,000th comic milestone, it would benefit me to keep things going a little bit.
I finished this comic and blog Wednesday night in preparation of being away. So that means right now, as you’re reading this, I’m hanging out at table #3414 on Artist Alley at Chicago Comic-Con. If you’re in town, I sincerely hope you come to visit me!
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra comes out today and it is very likely that I will be seeing the movie with my friends Gordon McAlipin from Multiplex, Zach Miller from Joe and Monkey and Joe Dunn from Joe Loves Crappy Movies as I have depicted here. At least, I hope that’s what happens. We have a nice little tradition of seeing movies together when we’re in town for the convention and I hope everyone can make it.
As for the movie, I kind of think it’s a win-win situation. Based of the awful trailer, I am fully prepared for this movie to be terrible but plan on having a good time soaking up the cheese. If it turns out to be awesome (as some early reviews have suggested in a guilty-pleasure kind of way) then that sounds good, too.
In the meantime, if you want to stay up to date with me on the convention floor, but sure to check out my Twitter account. I’ll be posting status updates from my phone as well as taking advantage of AudioBoo. I noticed a lot of web comic guys using it during San Diego Comic Con and I’m eager to try it out.
Basically, it’s like a mini-podcast. I record up to 3:00 minutes of audio into my phone and AudioBoo posts it to their site – complete with a link from Twitter, so you get complete coverage! Fun little app.
If Twitter isn’t your thing, then please feel free to enjoy this shot by shot remake of the trailer for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra that replaces the actors with action figures. Considering the movie is basically a 2 hour long toy commercial, the piece seems to cut to the heart of the matter.
Is anyone planning on seeing G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra this weekend? What are your expectations? Are you excited? Did the trailer make you skeptical like it made me skeptical? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
You guys know that I’m referencing Eyjafjallajokull Volcano in Iceland with today’s comic, right? The one with the billowing ash cloud that has grounded millions of airline travelers in Europe? Just checking.
Apologies for the delay getting the new comic up for you guys today. I tried working ahead so potential new readers from the C2E2 comic book convention would have something timely to look at while I was away. I was able to get Friday’s comic on the site before I left town, but not Monday’s comic. I had to sit down to work on it this evening after I put the kids to bed.
I would have worked on the comic last night except the show organizers wouldn’t let me load-out from the venue until after 5:00 PM. I didn’t get on the road until an hour later and I didn’t make it home until 11:30.
That’s not bad time, all things considered. But since I was out all night with my webcomic buddies the night before, spent the day on my feet behind my table and then another 5 and a half hours behind the wheel of a car, I was wrecked.
That said, I don’t have my convention recap written up yet, but that’s something I want to get on the site by tomorrow. So be sure to check back throughout the day for my thoughts and opinions about C2E2.
I will say that I was very encouraged by the number of people I met who said that C2E2 was their first con ever. I was also thrilled to meet the fans that sought me out and who thanked me for the work on the site. More than a couple of you said you thought my work was getting better – which was amazing. I want to thank everyone who took the time to come talk to me, buy a book or a shirt or just shoot the breeze. I had a great time talking to everyone and I have lots of fun personal stories to tell you about later!
I also had an opportunity to hang out with a bunch of different webcomic people that I have never had the pleasure to meet before and I was amazed how many of them either already knew what I looked like or were familiar with Theater Hopper after we made introductions. I have this vision in my head of being on the Webcomics B-Squad… a wannabe. But I’ve done my time in the trenches, you know? So maybe how I view my place in webcomics isn’t as low on the totem pole as I imagined!
Anyway, more tomorrow. Thanks for your patience and I hope you enjoyed today’s comic!
