Hey, gang.
I know I promised that I would type up my list of the Top 10 Movies of 2007 and I kind of flaked. So I started working on it tonight to have something to reference back to instead of breaking another promise.
One problem – my write-up wasn’t very good.
I thought that I could add some value to my picks by punching it up a little copy. I started writing and found myself just kind of regurgitating what I said in last weeks Triple Feature broadcast, so I scrapped it.
My advice? Download last week’s show. You won’t regret it. Gordon, Joe and I put together a great show with a lot of back and forth and a few surprises. It’s probably one of my favorite shows we’ve done over the last year. I was really proud of it.
Don’t forget to check out this week’s show, while you’re at it. We’re broadcasting live at 9:00 PM CST. We’ll be discussing In The Name of the King, The Orphanage, 27 Dresses as well as The Bucket List and First Sunday.
Sorry again for flaking out on the Top 10 list. But come back to the site for a DVD review of Paul Rudd in The Ten tomorrow.
I swear!

Turns out we’re going to be one man down fo The Triple Feature this evening. Gordon has to bow out for tonight. So, since I wasn’t able to get out of the house this weekend to see Run Fatboy Run like I had hoped (I blame a mutant head cold), I think we’re going to steer the topic of conversation down a different path than usual with this week’s show.
Joe and I would like to take this opportunity to field your personal questions. So if you have any, please e-mail them to me at theaterhopper@hotmail.com. They can be about movies, our web comics or what the weather is like in Des Moines versus New York. We don’t care what you ask, we just want to get you involved!
Of course, it would be more of a thrill if you could join us LIVE during the broadcast at 9:00 PM CST over at TalkShoe.com tonight. I mean, how awesome would that be? You could log on to the chat field and leave your question where we can make fun of your spelling or you could call in and talk to us in person where we can make fun of your accent!
That’s not very enticing, is it? Okay, I promise we won’t make fun. But call in all the same! It’ll be a blast!
See you there!

I completely forgot to mention it in my blog from this morning, but be sure to tune in to The Triple Feature podcast this evening at 9:00 PM CST. We record it live and you can participate in the program through TalkShoe.com! Join the chat room or talk to us over the phone in real-time!
And by “us,” of course I mean Gordon McAlpin from Multiplex and Joe Dunn from Joe Loves Crappy Movies.
I don’t know what we’re talking about, but I’m kind of itching to talk about Last Chance Harvey since I had the opportunity to see it this afternoon. Even though the romance is boilerplate, I found the performances endearing. I haven’t seen Hoffman this affecting since I can’t remember when. If you don’t choke up during the toast he delivers to his daughter during the wedding reception, you might be soul-dead.
I have more to say about the movie, but it looks like Thunderbolts are GO! in relation to Cami blogging for the site. So once I do a quick WordPress walk through for her, she’ll be adding her thoughts shortly. Be sure to check the site Tuesday for her correspondence. I don’t want to talk her up too much, but Cami has always been able to write circles around me, so I think you guys are going to get a kick out of what she has to contribute to the site.
If you aren’t able to catch our recording of The Triple Feature live tonight, be sure to download the show tomorrow. Did you know you can find us on iTunes? It’s true – and so handy! Subscribe to the feed and have shows waiting for you the next day! Awesome!

If you listened to The Triple Feature last night (and if you missed it, don’t worry – just subscribe to our feed on iTunes!) you’ll know that Gordon, Joe and I made our official Oscar picks in advance of the televised broadcast this Sunday. We decided to make it interesting by making a tiny wager. The two people with the least amount of correct predictions has to draw a guest strip for a winning artist. So if Gordon gets the most correct, Joe and I have to draw him a guest strip. Kind of fun, right?
Part of that agreement was that the three of us would post our marked Oscar ballots and submit them to public record. That way, it keeps everyone honest. No last minute changes before or during the broadcast.
My ballot is kind of large, so you’ll have to click here to view it. But it’s there for anyone who is interested.
I think most of the major categories are already sewn up. But I voted for a few dark horse contenders after looking at a few statistical averages and trends among Academy votes in the past. As far as the technical categories go, I have a theory that I’m hoping pays off. Where I get really lost is in the documentary and short film categories.
You’ll have to take a look at my ballot and tell me what you think. Do you think I have a shot at winning our little competition?

Two things that I couldn’t fit contextually with the giant blog post that preceded it, but I have more I need to talk about.
First, don’t forget to check out the podcast I host with Gordon McAlpin from Multiplex and Joe Dunn from Joe Loves Crappy Movies called The Triple Feature tonight at 9:00 PM over at TalkShoe.com.
For SURE we will be talking about Monsters vs. Aliens because I know this is one of the rare movies that all three of us have seen before recording the show. So you know we’re going to firing on all cylinders tonight!
We also gotten in the habit of reading listener questions on-air. We have a bunch of good questions for this week show and I’m really looking forward to answering them. If you’d like to have your question answered (it can be about movies, comics, whatever!) sent it to group@thetriplefeature.com. We WILL answer it!
The next thing I need to do is point your attention to another movie-themed web comic, Brian Carroll’s Instant Classic. Specifically, his latest strip, titled “The Last Seven Hours.” This comic is nothing short of brilliant. It’s basically a musical number in web comic form.
44 panels in length, plotted and written within an inch of it’s life, the comic is accompanied by a piano number written by Carroll and performed by three of his friends and the song is excellent.
I’ve known Brian for a few years. Our comics kind of came up around the same time. Stuff like this is where he really shines. It is unique, endearing and puts me to shame as a fellow artist.
I’ve always felt Brian’s efforts were the classier affair between our two comics. If Theater Hopper were Milk Duds, Instant Classic would be a chocolate covered truffle.
You owe it to yourself to check it out. Tell ‘im Milk Dud sentcha!

Since I was traveling home from Emerald City Comicon on Monday evening, we had to postpone recording our weekly installment of The Triple Feature. We pushed back the show to tonight and you can listen in LIVE at 9:00 PM CST.
Tonight, Joe, Gordon and I will be talking about Adventureland and Fast & Furious. I’m sure I’ll be telling more stories about my experience at Emerald City Comicon as well.
In fact, it might benefit you to listen to the live show tonight if you can, because there is a story I want to tell about an experience I had in Artist Alley too sensitive to commit to a recording. I think I might take a few minutes to share it after we’ve concluded the show and people are still connected to TalkShoe and can listen in.
Consider yourself teased. See you then!

I was so wrapped up talking about, well, Up, that I completely forgot to remind you guys to check out The Triple Feature tonight.
In case you’re unfamiliar, it’s a podcast I host along with Joe Dunn from Joe Loves Crappy Movies and Gordon McAlpin from Multiplex.
We record every Monday night at 9:00 PM and you can listen to us record the show LIVE!
Not only that, but the show has a chat room where you can interact with other listeners or maybe even Joe or myself (when Gordon gets to ranting too much.)
Be sure to check us out this evening. We’ll be discussing Up and Drag Me To Hell!

Tonight we’re discussing Moon, The Proposal and Year One.
Also, as a special treat, in partnership with MovieMake-Out.com, we’re discussing our picks for the Top 10 Best Sci-Fi movies with special guest Trisha Lynn!
We might go a little longer than our usual hour-long recording time, so know that you’re going to get your money’s worth!

First, I just wanted to remind everyone to check out The Triple Feature tonight at 9:00 PM CST. Not sure what we’re going to talk about, although I know that Joe tweeted about seeing The Fantastic Mr. Fox over the weekend and I’m very eager to hear what he has to say about it.
Cami and I had a date night on Saturday and we saw Robert Zemeckis’s A Christmas Carol, so I plan to spend a little time talking about that. For the Cliff’s Notes version of my review, I can say that the motion capture animation that Zemeckis is advocating continues to advance, but I don’t much see the point of it.
I mean, it’s impressive that they can use the technology to allow Jim Carrey to play 8 different roles (like some kind of digital Eddie Murphy), but the film boats an amazing cast. Between Carrey, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Bob Hoskins, Cary Elwes and Robin Write Penn I couldn’t help but think that I wanted to see the live-action version of this movie more.
I think this problem is compounded by the fact that the animators stay a little too close to the likeness of the flesh-and-blood actors and don’t push them far enough into caricature. Obviously Scrooge is an exaggeration of a contorted human face and the fact that you can still see Carrey’s mannerisms through the “digital makeup” is kind of revolutionary.
But it seems like they didn’t even bother to try and hide Oldman as Cratchit, Firth as Scrooge’s nephew Fred or Hoskins as Mr. Fezziwig. Granted, Oldman’s Cratchit is about two feet shorter than the actor in real life. But the faces are almost exactly the same. What’s the point?
At least in Beowulf, Zemeckis went to the effort of bulking up and tanning the other wise chubby and pasty Ray Winstone.
Anyway, check out The Triple Feature tonight at 9:00 PM CST for more of that.
CHANGING GEARS QUICKLY!
I wanted to point your attention to an interview I did with Andrew McDonald over at New-Gen that was posted over there this morning. It’s an audio recording and it’s a little over a half hour long, but I’m really pleased with how it turned out. If you have the time to listen to it, I think there are some particular insights that you will enjoy.
Andrew asked some very intelligent questions and I thought the conversation flowed naturally. We got beyond the boiler plate about Theater Hopper and my history with the comic and wandered into some really interesting territory regarding digital media, distribution models and webcomics in general. I strongly encourage you to check it out. It will be well worth your time.
Cheers!
