I know talking about a cheap-o horror movie with no advertising behind it like Stay Alive isn’t exactly the most timely reference, but it ties in to a more timely obcession that I’m riding out at the moment – Kingdom Hearts II.
Yes, yes. I know this isn’t a web comic about video games. There are more than enough of those to shake a stick at. But when I get into a game, bruther… I live, breathe and sleep it! Besdies… as the title implies, I’ll take any opportunity to subvert the iconography of childhood.
Got a few site issues to address. First of all, the t-shirts that everyone ordered a few weeks ago are back from the printer. That means I’ll be shipping them out this week. So if you live in the lower 48, you should hopefully be seeing your purchases soon.
I gotta tell you, even though not a ton of people bought shirts this time out, I think I’m going to stick with these designs a while and see if things turn around this summer. The shirts came out looking REALLY good. Those of you who ordered them are going to be very happy. The rest of you are going to be very jealous. I think I’m going to take a few photographs of Cami and I wearing the shirts so you guys can get a better sense of what they look like. Just slapping the design on a web page is a little obtuse when it comes to garment selection.
I should also update you guys that I gathering bid for the Theater Hopper: Year One book. I think I pretty much have my choice of printer nailed down, I’m just waiting for one final bid to come in. After that, I have a few pre-press tweaks to do and I hope to have it sent off to the printer next week!
Have you guys check out our newest sponsors? I don’t know why, but lately there seems to be a lot of interest in our 30 days for $10 promotion!
Geek Tragedy is more than just a clever name. It’s actually a very well done comic. I’m kind of surprised that I haven’t stumbled across this one before now. The site design is really tight and the illustration is very unique and refined. Lots of great stuff here!
The Review Zoo isn’t a web comic. But as their name indicates, it’s a review site. A virtual zoo-ful of reviews! Reviews on everything ranging from movies, to video games and action figures to comic books. Get your geek on with this highly-organized and easy to read site!
Rapture Press is a collective of nine different comics from all around the inter-web. I don’t have enough space to go into everything they have to offer, but if you’re reading list is a little stodgy, there should be more than enough content here to tide you over! If you’re looking for something new, try Rapture Press!
And lastly, Front Beat is a kind of sci-fi and anime-inspired serial that has a great vibe to it. The illustrations are both kind of sketchy and loose, but also very detailed and distinct. There are only 63 episodes at the moment, so it’s a good time to jump on and catch up with the story!
I also want to send another shout out to our previous advertisers, Multiplex, Dribble For Kids and After the End of the World. Be sure to check out all of these comics. These guys all work hard and do great work!
As you can see, I have one ad spot left. So if you’re interesting in getting some great exposure for not a lot of money, click here and read more about it! Or, perhaps you’re biding your time and waiting for the prime opportunity to leave your mark? Well, lucky for you we have a calendar that let’s you know when ad spots will become available! As always, if you have any questions about advertising with Theater Hopper, you can contact me directly.
One last bit of site news and I’ll get out of your hair.
Tomorrow is the last day for you to submit an entry into our contest for The Long Good Friday. To learn how about you can be eligible for one of five copies of the forthcoming DVD, click here. Tons of extras are on this DVD and it’s a really good film to boot. If you like gritty gangster movies, this one is excellent. It’s kind of a cult picture, but Bob Hoskins is excellent. A ferocious performance!
Of course, if you’re not one of our lucky winners, The Long Good Friday will be available in stores tomorrow. So I strongly suggest picking it up!
Sincere thanks to Anchor Bay Entertainment for allowing us the opportunity to take part in this promotion.
I think today’s comic will make a little more sense when or if you see Tim Burton’s adaptation of Sweeney Todd. From the early reviews I’ve read, it’s Burton’s best film since Ed Wood and could have been a lock for Best Picture if only Burton had reigned in his tendency to leap for the Z-grade horror moments.
You may or may not be familiar with the story of Sweeney Todd, but wrongfully accused, his wife and young daughter stolen from him, he goes on a murderous rampage in Victorian London in pursuit of revenge. He does this by luring his unsuspecting victims into his barber shop, where his slits their throats and disposes their bodies through a trap door into the local bakery below. There, the corpses are baked into meat pies.
At any rate, Burton really cuts loose (pardon the pun) when it comes to the murder scenes. Throats being cut and fountains of blood shooting like geysers everywhere. There is nothing lyrical or implied about it. He puts it right in your face. And I could see where that might turn off Academy voters down the line.
It’s a small complaint, compared to the rest of the film, I’m told. The performances and the music are great and the story seems tailor-made to suit Burton. But I think when it comes to the blood, that’s where he frustrates critics. Because often in his work, there is a self-serving moment that nearly capsizes the whole picture. His remake of Planet of the Apes was a whole FILM of those moments – and probably the reason it’s the most reviled film in his cannon.
I’m excited to see Sweeney Todd, but there’s a lot of great stuff coming out this weekend – National Treasure 2 and Walk Hard among them. I was supposed to see I Am Legend last night with Jared, but Cami’s been really sick lately and running a fever. So it wouldn’t have been a good idea to take off and leave her with Henry. Parental responsibilities will take you out of the stronger pop culture currents. I’m fine with this. But I hope I don’t fall too far behind. There’s too much stuff I don’t want to miss!
A quick note about next week – With the holiday’s coming up, I’m thinking about taking the week off. I need it. I’m exhausted. I don’t know if that means I’m taking the week off completely. I’m planning on watching a ton of movies I’ve been backlogged on and possibly posting the reviews next week. But I think comics are out of the picture just because they take a lot of time and I”m going to have my hands full with Henry, the holidays and relatives.
Keep coming back to the site, though. I’m sure I’ll be able to float you some new content. Just the comics will be on hold while I catch my breath. Also – since we’re not doing The Triple Feature next Monday due it being Christmas Eve and all, you’ll want to keep a close eye on this space in case we announce our replacement show. We’re talking about doing it next Wednesday. So come back here to confirm.
In non-site related news, I turned 30 today. I don’t know what to think about it. I guess I can’t really think about it. I’m so wiped out from the lack of sleep, it makes it hard to focus.
There’s supposed to be this large anxiety about turning 30 that I don’t have. I mean, I understand it’s a transition out of your 20’s and the free-wheeling ease of things. The older you get, the more responsibilities you take on and so forth. But there really isn’t a part of me that’s going to miss my 20’s. I had a good time then, but I’m having a good time – if not a better time – right now. Anyone who gets their knickers in a twist about turning 30, 40, 50, whatever… needs to reassess what it is about right now that sucks so bad compared to back then and change it. No one else is going to steer the ship for you, know what I mean?
End rant.
Anyway, tonight I’m staying in with family and we’re going to have cheese soup while I open presents. Not a bad little Friday if you ask me.
Take it easy and Happy Holidays!
This is the part of the story we like to call “building the drama.” I was half-way through inking it when I realized, “Hey, this comic has no punchline!”
That’s okay. Never every comic has to be fortified with your daily allowance of 10 comedy nutrients. Certainly not when compared to Friday’s comic – which was more of a visual gag than anything else.
At this point, I just want to cement the idea in your head’s that Jimmy was kind of a tool in his youth and the best way to do that is show you and not tell you.
I’m going to explore that idea a little more on Wednesday, specifically as it pertains to Jimmy’s relationship(s) with the opposite sex.
Much to my chagrin, I didn’t have an opportunity to see ANY of the myriad of new films released this week and I harbor a secret shame.
Cami’s folks offered to watch Henry Friday night so she and I could see He’s Just Not That Into You, but we only got as far as dinner before Cami wasn’t feeling well and we had to go home. We diluted ourselves into thinking maybe we could catch the late showing. But we both ended up crashing on the couch before 9:00 PM before waking up later, Rip Van Winkle style, and cursing our feeble bodies for being old and run down.
After that, I found it difficut to get motivated to see anything else. Cami had a social function Saturday night, so I was holding down the fort at home. She came back around 10:00 and I had about 15 minutes before Push started at the theater down the street. I couldn’t get myself up and out the door.
Henry took a nap on Sunday afternoon and Cami suggested I see Coraline. But it was 58 degrees outside and I decided to take the opportunity to sweep out a winter’s worth of sand and silt from the garage.
You know that scene in Old School where the college kids are telling Will Ferrell’s character to chug a beer, but he tries to worm out of it with the Home Depot / Bed, Bath & Beyond / “nice little Saturday” excuse? I’m starting to feel that way, but with movies.
If you want to listen to a couple of guys who KNOW what they’re talking about reflect on this week’s new releases while I moderate, be sure to listen to The Triple Feature this evening at 9PM CST over at TalkShoe.com. I’m not sure what we’ll be talking about specifically (since I’m such a flake). But, if nothing else, Joe can share with us his experience at the New York City Comic Con this weekend!
If you have a question for the show, we’ve gotten into the habit of soliciting those through e-mail and answering them at the top of the show. So send all of your movie-related questions to group@thetriplefeature.com. We WILL answer them!
Or, you can listen live and ask your question in real-time. If you want, you can call-in and ask it in person! So many options!
That’s all for me this morning. I’ll catch up with you guys soon. Got a comment about today’s strip? Leave it below and I chat you up!
