So how does a rotted corpse wearing a “Will Ferrell Sux” t-shirt end up tied from a tree by his thumbs? Click here to find out!
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy opens today and I’ve been looking forward to seeing it for quite a while. I know Elf was Will Ferrell’s first leading role, but I think Anchorman looks like it was written with his specific talents in mind. Just the name “Ron Burgundy” communicates so much to me. It sounds like a stage name a jock without any creativity would give to himself. It also has vague porn star undertones, which I think makes it even funnier.
Even though I hold Ferrell’s talent in great esteem, I think what will really push Anchorman over the top is the great cast they’ve assembled. Christina Applegate, David Koechner, Fred Willard and Chris Parnell are all great. Steven Carell has the newsman shtick down pat. They also have the woefully underrated Paul Rudd, who can knock an abstract comedic performance out of the park. Anyone who’s seen Wet, Hot American Summer knows what I’m talking about.
I guess the film also has a ton of cameos. Be on the lookout for Fred Armisen, Danny Trejo, Judd Apatow, Luke Wilson, Jack Black, Stephen Root, Tim Robbins, Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn. I really like how some of these actors who have been in other pictures together are gravitating toward each other and appearing in each other’s films. It’s quite the little company they’ve put together!
That’s about all I can say for Anchorman at the moment, so I suppose it’s best to turn my attention to another bit of news.
You might of noticed in the upper right hand corner above the comic that today’s strip marks our 300th comic. That’s a lot of doodles, my friends. Almost a year’s worth (if I was drawing every day).
I’ve been doing Theater Hopper almost two years. We celebrate that milestone in less than a month. Although I’m reluctant to do organize any crazy celebration anytime we pass markers on the road, I like to at least point them out from time to time. Because without you guys, there wouldn’t be 300 strips.
Thanks for your support. You keep reading ’em, I’ll keep writing ’em!
Sometimes it’s funny to write a straight up the middle "ba-da-dump-tssh!" kind of joke and let the chips fall where they may. Say what you will, but I had a lot of fun doing the little pieces of character expressions in this one.
Blades of Glory is a movie that I’ve been excited about ever since I saw the early trailers. Will Ferrell in his custom cocky snarl uttering "You’re welcome, Stockholm…" just gets to me for some reason. I think this movie is going to be a real hoot. Ferrell is always at his best when he plays the cock-sure buffoon.
I recognize that Ferrell isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Every time I comment on how much I love his movies, invariably someone comes out of the woodwork to tell me how much he sucks. Obviously humor is probably the most subjective of art forms and the further out on a limb a performer goes, the more likely he is to attract equally forceful detractors. Whoever it shakes out, I’ve thrown my lot in with Ferrell and that’s pretty much all she wrote. Even in his worst movies, I can still find things I like.
Cami and I were able to get away for the house for a little while this weekend and see Reign Over Me and I really liked it. I’ll be doing a short, 100 word review of the movie that I will be submitting to The Des Moines Register as part of an online contest where they are looking to hire a new stable of reviewers. I wrote a post about it on Friday. There’s an online component to this competition. They’re going to select a handful of reviews and let their readers decide which one’s the like best. The reviewers with the most votes get added to the team. I’m going to call you guys in for backup when the time comes. Until then, keep your eyes peeled.
I was going to tell a story about the trials we went through to get there, but I have a comic about Reign Over Me in mind for Wednesday and I think I’ll wait to share it then. We’ll be talking about Reign Over Me during tonight’s Triple Feature talkcast and I might tell the story there, so you might get a little preview. We’ll also be talking about Netflix and the rumor that the company is attempting to make deals with local public libraries to distribute through them. We’re still doing a little bit of research on that one, so it’ll be interesting to see how it shakes out.
If neither of those options interest you, what about the promise of free stuff?
In a partnership with 20th Century Fox, I will be giving away copies of Copying Beethoven starring Ed Harris and which will be coming out on DVD next Tuesday, April 3rd. But the only way you can win is if you listen to tonight’s show.
At the end of the broadcast, I will be sharing one half of a secret code. Listen in and write it down. Then, be sure to come back to Theater Hopper on Wednesday for the second half of the secret code that will be right here in the blog. Send in the complete code to theaterhopper@hotmail.com with the subject "Beethoven" along with you name, age and full mailing address and the winners will be selected at random!
It would be great if we could get a lot of participation on this one. The more we generate buzz for this promotion, the greater likelihood that we’ll be able to do bigger and better promotions like this one in the future! So remember The Triple Feature talkcast TONIGHT at 9:00 PM CST.
In the meantime, be sure to check out Copying Beethoven when it comes out on DVD April 3rd!
See you then!
Although I’ve been eagerly anticipating Step Brothers ever since I first saw the red band trailer for it back in May, I’m aware that there are people out there who are growing tired of Will Ferrell’s man-boy routine and are looking for a reason for this movie to fail.
I’ve come to terms with the reality that Will Ferrell is no longer everyone’s cup of tea. It’s only been four short years since Anchorman which remains (in my mind) his high water mark and he’s been losing some credibility ever since.
I don’t pay attention to the critics. I always have a good time when I see a Will Ferrell movie. Mostly because it seems like he’s having such a good time himself! Truthfully, I don’t know exactly what people want him to do differently? Take on more everyman roles like he did in Stranger Than Fiction? Alright, that’s fair. I mean, I loved Stranger Than Fiction. But after a while, you’d want him to go back to being the ultimate man-boy, wouldn’t you? Admit it.
Some people can’t resist complaining about everything…
I plan on seeing Step Brothers this weekend, it’s just a matter of when. Cami and I have been home on our “staycation”this week getting a bunch of home projects done. We’ve marked everything off our list and we agreed that Step Brothers would be our reward.
Then I kind of got it in my head that after a week of breaking my back installing ceiling fans, cleaning out our basement and lugging furniture upstairs that "seeing a movie" didn’t really sound like much of a reward.
Cami had the suggestion that we go to a local amusement park – one I haven’t been to in 10 years – and I immediately latched onto that. So, for as badly as I want to see Step Brothers, I currently feel a little more passionate about the amusement park. I mean, at least from the standpoint of having bragging rights.
Can you imagine me going back into work on Monday and talking to my co-workers? “So, what’d you do with your week off? Oh, cleaned out my basement and saw a movie.” I mean, at least throw in the amusement park for a little color!
We’ll see how it goes. I think it’s supposed to rain all day Friday. Go figure.
Anyway, that’s about it for me. I feel that because of the staycation I’ve been really disconnected from things. I’m really not even accessing the internet except to update the site. I know ComiCon is going on right now and there is a lot of movie news coming off the convention floor. But I can’t bother to really dig in and digest it all. I’ll be looking for some kind of recap by the end of the week.
Until then, take it easy and I’ll see you here on Monday!
Remember last year when MTV Geek asked the cast of Harry Potter to do and say things “the right way – the American way?” It was pretty effin’ hilarious.
The shine is a little bit off the apple the second go around. But still, it’s nice they did a follow up.
