The Des Moines Register – Iowa’s largest daily newspaper – is looking for applicants for a new team of community movie reviewers.
I am totally gunning for this job.
The initial requirements are kind of tricky. They want you to submit a review of 100 words or less before they select the best reviews and post them online for readers to vote on. The most well-received reviewers get a spot on the team.
Part of me thinks I have the inside track on this. Theater Hopper already appears in Juice – a weekly youth publication put together by members of the The Des Moines Register’s existing staff. Also, I know the guy who is accepting submissions. I actually used to write for him on a freelance basis a few years ago reviewing concerts for The Register. The devil you know, right? How can they overlook me?
But the real ace in the hole is going to be you guys. After Cami and I see Reign Over Me this weekend, I’m going to burn lean tissue putting together a tight review so it’s a lock for the online voting round. When my review is posted, I’m going to call on your support to put me over the top. I know we can do it together.
Keep your eyes peeled!

Before I forget, I wanted to direct everyone’s attention to a great movie-themed web site I think you’ll all enjoy.
It’s called The Burgg and it was created by my good friend Bernie Hou who also created the web comic Alien Loves Predator.
The concept of The Burgg is deceptively simply and grossly addictive. A member of the community draws a scene from a movie – any movie. You’re then left to guess what movie they’re referencing. Most of the images you’ll guess right away. But every once in a while there will be one that stumps you. It’s a lot of fun to play along and they have a movie discussion forum on the site as well. One of these days I need to get off my butt and submit a drawing of my own!
At any rate, check it out. The Burgg. A lot of fun!
Have a great weekend everyone!

I feel like since I relaunched the site, there are a million and one things I want to call your attention to. But I also want to be careful not to overwhelm you with too much stuff at once. So I’m trying to parse things out a little bit.
This afternoon, why not consider joining the Theater Hopper THorum>? It’s a great place for fans of the comic and movies in general to come in and get to know each other!
I’m also using the THorum as a place to help steer the redesign in the right direction. Let me know if you catch any broken links or make suggestions for new features to add! Or, if you’re looking for a more light-hearted diversion, I’m taking suggestions for movie quotes to add to the randomizer that displays them at the bottom of every page here on the site!
Hope to see you there!

I was sitting around and thinking a little bit and want to get your feedback. I’m curious as to your thoughts about the Theater Hopper “community” and if I’m doing enough to promote it or make it more visible.
Long-time readers remember the THorum community. I’ve tried to relaunch it a couple of times, but I’ve decided to give up the ghost. You can’t put lightning in a bottle twice.
That’s not to say that I’ve given up on community-building altogether. We have a stable of regular posters who leave their thoughts and opinions in the comments section of the blog. I just wonder if I’m doing enough to promote that? Maybe someone who doesn’t read the blog has an opinion about the comic, but no outlet to express it. Maybe they’re not seeing the “COMMENT” link at the bottom of each blog post.
I don’t know. I just wanted to do a little brainstorming, kick around a few ideas and see what you guys thought.
What can I do to attract more people to the comments section and are there additional avenues toward community-building that I haven’t explored?
Thanks.

Hey, guys. Remember a few weeks ago when I left a post asking for your thoughts and suggestions on ways that I could establish a greater community presence here on Theater Hopper?
Well, yesterday I found an excellent article that listed 15 different plug-ins that could help me to achieve that goal. Several of them offer a level of interactivity – not only with the site – but with other visitors that I think could be very beneficial.
I have my own ideas about what plug-ins I would like to incorporate, but I would like to get your feedback and find out what features would be valuable to you. It would be very easy to go whole-hog and install ALL of these suggested plug-ins, but I want to try a slow roll out and integrate features into the site at a pace that everyone can keep up with.
Please read the article and investigate some of the plug-ins. If you could leave your comments in reply to this post, I would appreciate it!
