Shamefully I wasn’t aware of Rob and Elliot until Zach over at Joe and Monkey made me aware of them just this year. Good thing – it’s probably one of my most favorite new discoveries.
I don’t know how to explain it. The look is manga-esque, but not annoying like most of that stuff. Expressions aren’t overtly exaggerated. It plays closer to reality.
The pacing of the dialogue is a real plus. Very witty without being too eager. Still, you have to give it up for a concept like the adorable – but deadly! – iMonkey.
Honestly, if I had created that, I would have kicked my feet up and said “Looks like I’m on auto-pilot from here on out!” That’s the kind of great idea you could hang an entire strip from.
But Clay and Hampton Yount don’t stop there. Oh, no! They’ve got a real swinging comic going on and you should all check it out. Thanks for the great guest strip!
Incidentally, if you want to see my rendering of their characters, vote for Theater Hopper at buzzComix and laugh at my inferior interpretation!
I mentioned this on Monday, but I’ve pulled the blog out of the archives.
In celebration of Rob and Elliot’s 100th strip, Clay Yount asked me to draw a guest strip for him. I was only more than happy to oblige.
I get a real kick out of reading Rob and Elliot. It’s a fairly pedestrian set up executed with sublime talent. It was a real treat to play in their sandbox for a while.
Anyway, the strip is up and running if you want to take a look at it.
By the by – It’s also worth noting that Joe and Monkey recently celebrated their 300th strip and that is an accomplishment worthy of recognition.
Zach Miller busts his hump 7 DAYS A WEEK to bring you guys the funny and he’s doing a damn fine job of it. Reward him with your traffic. Go on. Reward him.
Need extra motivation? Zach just celebrated the big 2-4. So click through to his site as a little birthday present, will you?
So I went over to PvP today and noticed that my good buddy Wes Molebash – Boxcar associate and creator of You’ll Have That had a guest strip up and running over at Mr. Kurtz’s site! You can view it here.
I can’t quite describe the level of jealousy coursing through my viens, but it’s borderline toxic. Like Britney Spears-toxic.
But the comic is funny as all get-out and the opportunity couldn’t have been given to a nicer guy. Scott even gave Wes’s new book a plug in the blog! And since Wes once did the same for me, I’d like to return the favor now.
Be sure to check out Wes’ book "You’ll Have That: A Comic Strip by Wes Molebash" is available at Amazon.com right now. Click here to order.
See how it works, kids? You plug my book and I’ll plug your book!
I should also send a shout-out to Clay Yount over at Rob and Elliot for sending over a bunch of traffic and talking up "Theater Hopper: Year One." Thanks, Clay!
If any of you guys have web sites and are feeling generous, please let all of your readers know about the realease of "Theater Hopper: Year One" on Monday, April 17. LiveJournal, MySpace, Facebook – whatever tools you have at your disposal to share information about the book. Any mention you can give, I would appreciate. And who knows? It might put you one step closer to those street team prizes! Just a reminder!

GUEST STRIP – CLAY AND HAMPTON YOUNT

Today’s guest strip comes from my Boxcar brothers-in-arms, Clay and Hampton Yount. Clay and Hampton produce the always-excellent Rob & Elliot as well as Cosmobear. Two of a very small handful of strips that make me ROTFLMAO on a consistent basics. Check ’em out.
You doubt their quality?! Well, Hampton just recently won a comedy competition in Washington D.C. that affords him an all-expense paid trip to Hollywood to perform at the Improve there. So suck on that!
That said, Clay had a few reservations about the strip he sent to me. But I like it a lot. I think it captures something pure and essential about the developing relationship between Jared and Shia LaBeouf.
Now for something convoluted and unnecessary.
Last Saturday I was out running a few errands and Cami called me on my cell phone to pick up lunch. “Get whatever you want,” she said.
So, like the proud, upstanding, overweight American I am, I went to Burger King.
I like Burger King, but you have to be careful to eat just the right amount. Too much Burger King and you’re looking at a long afternoon of stomach upset and evaporated dreams.
For me, the kids meal is perfect. You get an appropriate amount of Burger King – PLUS! – free toy. Who’s the big winner? That’s right. Me.
So I purchase my kids meal (hamburger, no pickles) and I see that they are promoting Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull. I’m excited, but The King kind of ran the Iron Man promotion out on a rail kind of quickly, didn’t he?
I get the food home and I’m looking at the side of the bag. It lists the 8 different toys you can get. Indy running away from the boulder, a pen that writes in invisible ink… you know, the regular stuff.
Anyway, I notice that there is also a toy featuring Shia LaBeouf on a motorcycle. "I hope I don’t get that one!" I say to Cami.
I reach into the bag and what do I find?…
So I was a little bit disappointed.
But as I was eating my lunch, I started to study this miniaturized LaBeouf (almost life size!) and I started to wonder about the proportions. Was real-life Shia like this? Then I began to notice the eyes. I held the toy closer to get a better look…
Closer still…
The tiny plastic avatar of Shia LaBeouf is AS BORED to be a toy as I am to HAVE him as a toy!
Those droopy lids will haunt my nightmares forever.
FOREVER!!!
Regarding the movie in question, Cami and I plan on seeing Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull tonight. It’ll be a nice reprieve in a week of incredible stress and worry.
We’re leaving Henry and Truman with Cami’s parents this evening, taking a little time for ourselves and then going back to Rochester to visit my Dad in the hospital.
Dad is doing well, by the way. They moved him out of the ICU into a private room on Wednesday morning and they’ve had him up and walking the last few days. He’s exhausted, but recovering well. They took out his chest tubes and the IVs going into his neck yesterday and they’re talking about discharging him on Sunday – so we’re really looking forward to that.
I still have a few guest comics in my back pocket and, depending how things shake out this weekend, you’ll probably see them next week. I’m thinking Monday at least and then getting back to regular comics on Wednesday and Friday. Since I have more guest comics than that, I’ll probably use them to fill in on Tuesday and Thursday. I would feel bad not running them. Especially when they were sent to me without solicitation and as a show of solidarity during this time of upheaval and my Dad’s surgery.
It’s been a long week, but things are looking up. Thanks to everyone for their support and I’ll see you here on Monday!
Have a great weekend, everyone!
It’s probably not good form that I’m talking about Theater Hopper’s site traffic with you, but I thought this was a funny story that you might enjoy.
Last night when I got home from work, I settled down at the kitchen table and was checking the site’s traffic while Henry was eating dinner. Looking at my logs, traffic to the site was on par with an average Monday. Refreshing the logs a little later, I saw an insane jump in the number of hits. About half of Monday’s traffic gathered in the time span of about 15 minutes.
I was checking my referrals to see where the traffic was coming from, but using my real-time counter, could only see they were coming from StumbleUpon. I couldn’t see where on my site they were landing.
A Henry finished eating, I folded up my laptop content to wait for Google Analytics to pull the landing page information once it had time to log the traffic a few hours later (Google Analytics runs on a delay).
I gave Henry a bath, put him to bed and left to get a haircut (while Cami was still at home) before coming back to check on the traffic logs. I logged in to Google Analytics and saw that it had been populated with the new data. I checked on Traffic Sources, I went to Referring Sites, I identified StumbleUpon and I filtered the results by landing page.
What was the comic everyone was going so crazy about? This one. A guess strip by Clay and Hampton Yount of Rob and Elliott from 4 years ago.
You probably found this story underwhelming. Imagine how I feel!
In all seriousness, though – Rob and Elliott is an excellent comic and their guest strip from 2005 is actually one of my favorites. If people are checking it out, all the better. Because that means not only are they visiting the site and boosting my numbers, but they’re seeing that link back to Rob and Elliot and hopefully checking out more of Clay and Hampton’s stuff, too.
I’ll just be damned if I can figure out exactly how StumbleUpon works!
