Today’s comic comes to us from David Smith, the creator of the web comic A Fairly Twisted Reality.
Dave is referencing the upcoming Adam Sandler movie Click – which I haven’t decided if it’s worth seeing yet or not. I watched Spanglish over the weekend and – although I hated Tea Leoni’s character – it’s interesting to watch Sandler stretch in a different direction. Doing a movie about a father who fast forwards through the "boring" parts of life only to learn a "valuable lesson" (TM) about missing what counts in the end feels like a step backwards. Seems like he’s slumming. People seem to like him. He has obvious marquee value. Why doesn’t he trade up?
But I digress. Thanks to David for the great comic. I really like how people are continuing to play with the idea that Victor has a secret crush on Tom. I swear there is more implied man-lovin’ in this strip than the FDA requires!
Be sure to check out David’s web comic, by the way. He’s got a really unique art style and I like some of the oddball stuff he has going on. Some of it is a little ribald – a little blue – but I think it comes from an honest place.
While I’m at it, I should probably mention our two new sponsors – Eejits and Hellbound. These two comics couldn’t be further apart.
Eejits is kind of an interesting art experiment where the creator posts images of the crazy, imaginative creatures in his head. The coloring this guy does is really amazing and some of the creatures he comes up with are really cute. Check it out.
Hellbound is a more complex affair. A very lovingly detailed narrative strip with several panels per update. There’s a great synopsis to help bring you up to speed on the story so far. Plus, you can read the comic in Italian! Who else does that?
That about does it for me. I’m kind of bummed that I’m not around to run commentary regarding all the "controversy" surrounding The Da Vinci Code. I have some strong opinions about it. I might try to tackle them when I get back. But don’t feel too bad for me. Cami and I will be in Nice, France on the 22 and we’re thinking about catching a train to Cannes for the film festival where we might check out Tom Hanks’ latest offering! Wish us luck!
Hey, guys. I’m back. But first, I gotta take care of some site business.
In case you didn’t see the ad in the upper right, I am currently running a sale on all t-shirts and baby doll tees. All clothing in the store is $9.99 until July 31. I’m trying to burn off some inventory to raise money for my trip to Wizard World Chicago on August 4 – 6.
Incidentally, if you order a t-shirt or baby doll tee during this period, you get a free 11 x 17" poster. It’s a pretty sweet deal, so order today!
I should probably also mention that I got the proofs for Theater Hopper: Year One back from the printer the other day. I poured over them and gave them my stamp of approval, so that means the books will go into production starting next week! We’re still on time for our end of July deadline, so those of you who pre-ordered a book will probably see your copy sometime in early August.
I gotta thank all of you again for helping me out with the pre-sale. With the proofs in my hands this week, it all became that much more real and it has me pretty psyched. You guys are gonna LOVE this book when you get it. Of course it’s never too late to still place an order if you haven’t already. Especially now that you know the books are on their way! Think about it!
I want to make sure you guys know about the current batch of sponsors we have on the site. Be sure to check out Aoi House for fun manga action, Dribble For Kids for great comic book-style sci-fi action, Monkey Pirate Zombie for, well… really cool comics, animation and games, and finally Brinkerhoff for some really wry commentary on relationships and what happens after they end.
I was going to say some stuff about the comic, but all those links made me really tired. I suppose I can say that I was very happy with the way this one turned out – both the art and the writing. Sometimes it’s fun just to do something simple, y’know?
Will Cami and I see Click this weekend? Most likely. She is, after all, an Adam Sandler junkie. Last night she tossed Big Daddy into the DVD player. To what end, I’m not sure. Maybe to remember what it’s like to watch an Adam Sandler movie? A little mental exercise. She fell asleep watching it, if that means anything.
Have a great weekend!
I was reading this short profile on Mike Binder, writer and director of Reign Over Me on EW.com this morning and I wanted to gouge my eyes out.
In the introductory paragraph, the article’s author Neil Drumming misidentifies Don Cheadle’s character as Alex Johnson (it’s Alan) and says Adam Sandler’s character loses his wife and two children in the 9/11 attack (he had three children). Do these writers even see the movies they’re profiling? Do they have editors? Hell, a quick search over at IMDB would have at least gotten the name of Cheadle’s character right! I thumbed around the site for a little while to see if I could send an e-mail to Drumming to point out his mistakes. I don’t know if that’s anal, obnoxious or both.
I don’t know. Maybe I shouldn’t complain. After all, I can barely spell. But on the other hand, I don’t have the resources of the mighty Time Warner empire behind me, either.

In today’s incentive image, Tom and Cami enjoy a refreshing summertime treat. Vote for Theater Hopper at Top Web Comics to see for yourself!
I don’t know how fair it is to compare Eddie Murphy’s Imagine That to Adam Sandler’s Bedtime Stories. The children’s imaginary world translated into a fantasy/reality situation. They weren’t the source of out-and-out business predictions like they are in Imagine That .
Still, it’s noticeable that there are two movies with such similar thematic elements coming out so close to each other.
Maybe it’s not so weird when you consider how different studios have outright stolen from each other and put competing films back to back over the years.
A Bug’s Life and Antz. Volcano and Dante’s Peak. Mission to Mars and Red Planet. It happens a lot. I’m sure there’s more if I actually sat down to think about it. Maybe you guys have some similarly-themed movies you can share in the comments section below?
I don’t have much more to share except we’re still trying to get to the problem of this malware error people are getting when they are trying to access the site.
From what we’ve learned, it seems to be only affecting Safari and Google Chrome users. I’ve been doing some searches online and have discovered we’re not the only one suffering this problem, but I’m not finding much in terms of solutions.
I’ve been bombed with e-mails and Tweets from people telling me that they can’t access the site. I feel personally responsible to everyone who notifies me of the error and is trying to help. But I can’t respond to all of you. I’m sorry. Please don’t take it as a snub. I’m just trying to focus my efforts on solving the problem.
I’m doing everything to update security on my own machine, we’ve combed through the code of the site, we’re trying to isolate ads from our network that could be causing the problem. We’re even looking through the THorum to see if it could be originating there. It’s a lot of trial and error, but it’s all part of the regular maintenance that goes into the site.
If it’s any consolation, please know that I am not DELIBERATELY trying to infect your machines with malware. Frankly, I’m not that smart (which is probably how the site ended up in this position to begin with.)
Please trust that we’re doing everything we can.
In the meantime, let me know your thoughts about Imagine That. Are you planning on seeing it, maybe taking your kids or a younger sibling? Or have you grown tired of Eddie Murphy’s family movie shtick and are secretly hoping he makes a sequel to Eddie Murphy: Raw instead?
Thanks again for everyone’s patience and have a great weekend!
I get sent news releases, trailers and photos from studios all the time and I generally do a very poor job of passing them on to you.
Part of the reason behind this is because there are a million and one movie blogs and they all tend to post the same stuff at the same time. So there’s no reason Theater Hopper will ever become your exclusive outlet for this kind of thing.
The other piece of the puzzle is, frankly… a lot of the stuff I’m sent is crap. Or at least *I* think it’s crap. If you’d like to see more photos, trailers and press releases from the studios here on the site, let me know. Maybe it will lead to something.
Anyway, I was just sent a trailer for a movie I am legitimately excited to see – Judd Apatow’s Funny People coming out on July 31.
Be forewarned that this is the red band trailer, so the language is a little salty. But if you’ve seen The 40 Year-Old Virgin or Knocked Up, you’re probably already on board with it.
Anyway, enjoy!
For a little extra fun, check out some of the web sites created in support of the film – several of them featuring work from different characters in the film!
So what do you guys think? Are you interested in seeing Funny People? I think it’s going to be interesting to watch Adam Sandler interact with other talented comedians. His films tend to isolate him, put the focus on him. I’m curious to see how he handles himself in an ensemble.
For me, Funny People kind of feels like the last hurrah of the blockbuster season. Yeah, yeah – I know G.I. Joe – The Rise of Cobra comes out after that. But does anyone think that counts?

Apr 14, 2003 | RIDING IN TANKS WITH ANGRY ANGELS |
It’s been a little while since we last talked. Two and a half weeks, to be exact.
Let me tell you what happened.
On Monday, October 24, I posted my comic about Halloween and social media-themed horror costumes. The very next day, my family and I went on a little vacation. Where’d we go? Walt Disney World! It was Henry’s first trip out of state and – as you can imagine – it was a pretty big deal.
We had a great time going on all the rides and doing all the touristy stuff. Coming back to reality, however, proved a little more difficult.
We came back on Sunday, October 30 – which also happens to be our town’s night for trick or treating. I know, I know. Halloween is on the 31st. But around here, they do trick or treating the day before. It’s a regional tradition that started in the 1930s by women’s magazines as an anti-vandalism campaign and it just kind of stuck.
The point is, that morning, we were up at 4:00 AM EST to make our flight, we got off the plane at 2:00 PM CST and we basically had very little time before we suited up in our Halloween costumes to canvas the neighborhood for free candy that evening.
Naturally, everyone was exhausted and we were in bed by 8:00 PM that evening. That explains why there was no new comic on Monday, October 31.
NOW… should I have anticipated this and created a comic in advance for the 31st? Yes, I should have.
Could I have tried to play catch up that week and produce a comic for Wednesday or Thursday. Yes, I could have.
Neither of those things happened.
You know how it is with vacations – especially if you work a full time job. You go away for a while to decompress and you come back more stressed out than ever trying to play catch up with the life you put on hold.
That’s what happened to me, so I decided to take a mulligan on last week’s comic.
Fast forward to this week… why no comic on Monday? Well, the story is a little less dramatic but basically it involved some personal matters that needed to be attended to over the weekend. I was planning to finish the comic Monday night and post it Tuesday morning, but instead I got a call from a friend who was in town and I hadn’t seen in 10 years. He wanted to grab a drink and catch up. I mean, the dude was in my wedding. I couldn’t really say “no.” So Monday night kind of got thrown out the window.
Anyway, that brings us to the present. I worked on the comic last night and here it is.
Shamefully, I can’t take full credit. My good buddy Zach Miller from Joe and Monkey gave me the idea to dress Tom up like a woman for this comic. But the suspicion surrounding Tom’s choice was all mine.
Looking at the trailer for Jack and Jill, I think Adam Sandler is pretty much daring us to hate him completely now. Either that, or he’s so insulated by money that he doesn’t care. It basically looks like the kind of low-rent movie Sandler’s cynical Hollywood comedian character from Funny People would star in. In fact, the first time I saw this trailer, I thought it was a striaght up parody.
I’m a Sandler fan, to some degree. I’ve probably seen more of his movies than I care to admit. But it’s clear from the outset that Jack and Jill is a one-joke premise and, frankly, there’s not very much that’s charming about a 45 year-old man running around in drag.
To me, Jack and Jill looks about as desperate as Eddie Murphy in Norbit or Martin Lawrence in Big Momma’s House 2.
Actually, when I think about it, Jack and Jill is worse.
With Murphy and Lawrence, you could at least argue that they’re trying to create distinctive characters. With Jack and Jill, it’s pretty much Sandler running around in a wig, delivering lines in a pinched-off voice. No one is really going to look at Sandler and give him credit for his character work. He’s basically been playing the same characters since his days at SNL. Keep in mind, this is the man who created “About To Sneeze Man” as a cheap Halloween costume idea on Weekend Update.
I wanted my comic to be more of a take-down piece of Jack and Jill, but I realized that disparaging the movie was not unlike beating a dead horse with a barrel of fish recently shot at.
Man, I seriously can’t wait until The Muppets comes out and rescues us from this nightmare.
Anyway, that’s all I have for you on the comic/movie front. But I did want to share one last thing with you as a kind of reward for being so patient the last two and half weeks.
You remember that I said that the family and I went to Walt Disney World, right? Well, they have this event at the Magic Kingdom on select nights called Mickey’s Not-So-Scary-Halloween Party. They have a specially themed parade and fireworks and you get to run around the park trick-or-treating and collecting candy at all the attractions.
They encourage you to dress us, so we did.
I enjoy dressing up with my kids for Halloween only because I like to think that it makes things a little more special for them. I want to demonstrate to them that it’s okay to have fun and be silly. That said, I was a little nervous about walking around Magic Kingdom dressed up like Thor. It didn’t occur to me until we were on the bus on our way to the park, “What if I’m the only adult in costume?”
I’m pleased to report that’s not the case. There were several adults in costumes and I received many compliments and high-fives.
Incidentally, I take my cues from Henry when it comes to costume choices. Last year, he wanted to be Buzz Lightyear. So I dressed up as Woody. This year, he wanted to be Captain America. So it was only natural that I go as Thor. They’re best buddies! “Avengers Assemble!” and whatnot.
Plus, now I have my very on Mjölnir. That’s something you can enjoy year-round.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the photo. Sorry again about the delay. Incidentally, when I’m off-schedule like this, it might be beneficial for you to subscribe to Theater Hopper by e-mail.
WAAAAAYYYY back at the top of the page, there’s a form field where you can input your e-mail address. When the site updates, you’ll receive automatic notification. It’s very handy when I flake out. But I promise to better next week.
Since I haven’t updated for a while, I’d sincerely appreciate it if you used the ShareThis application below to let people know that there is a new Theater Hopper comic up on the site. Facebook it, Google+ is, Twitter that bad boy… whatever your comfortable with. You guys have been doing a great job spreading the word and it really helps. C’mon… It only takes a second, right?
Thanks again and have a great week!

I was really hoping to get a new comic to you today, but the responsibilities of fatherhood got in the way.
I had just finished penciling and inking the last panel of what’s supposed to be a new 7-panel strip for you guys and Pearl was crying her head off. We couldn’t figure out what was wrong with her. We tried rocking her, consoling her, reading stories, laying down with her – everything.
Eventually, we decided that we’d let her in our bed with us, but even that didn’t work. She didn’t have a fever, she didn’t need a drink, she had a clean diaper… we couldn’t figure it out. She kept writhing around and crying all night.
So, yeah. The comic didn’t get finished.
Thank goodness for this guest strip from Bob Dahlstrom!
I’ve known Bob a good long while. He used to have a comic called Think Tank that I used to really, really enjoy. These days he’s got a new comic called Egomaniac; an journal comic which… I think I enjoy more!
It had kind of been a while since I checked in with Bob, so I was really surprised by his work. His line work has really improved. His inking, too. It’s always really cool to watch how people’s techniques evolve.
Bob actually hit on something I wanted to discuss, kind of by accident by bringing up Adam Sandler and That’s My Boy.
First, take a look at the trailer.
Shamefully, I’m going to admit that looks kind of funny to me. Although I think a lot of this film’s success is going to be attributable to Andy Samberg.
Oh, I know exactly what Sandler is doing here. Irresponsible man-child shows uptight square how to let loose a little while learning something about responsibility on the way. Pepper the script with a couple fringe members of society and add a liberal dash of butt jokes. Step 4: PROFIT.
But here’s the thing… I think Adam Sandler might be this generation’s Jerry Lewis.
Hear me out.
Both of them started in nightclubs before moving up to venerable comedy institutions. Martin and Lewis and Saturday Night Live, respectably.
Both of them went solo, starring in a string of successful films heavy on slapstick. The Delicate Delinquent, Cinderfeella and The Bellboy for Lewis. Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore and The Wedding Singer for Sandler.
In later years, their popularity waned and the both took several hits from the critics. But both continued to be box office successes. Lewis’ film Hardly Working made $50 million at the box office in 1981 despite being panned by critics. That’s almost $120 million today.
Sandler continues to be a bankable movie star today. His last movie, Jack and Jill swept The Razzies last year and had a 3% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes but it still made almost $75 million at the box office.
Both men are philanthropists. Lewis’ name is synonymous with the Muscular Dystrophy Association. His annual telethons have raised over $2.6 billion to fight the disease. He hosted those telethons for 44 years. Sandler is just getting started in this arena. In 2007, Sandler donated $1 million to the Boys and Girls Club in his hometown, Manchester, New Hampshire.
Look, all I’m saying is that Sandler is about 15 years away from the French calling him a genius. Wait and see if I’m right.
Anyway, that’s it for now. Thanks again to Bob for the fantastic guest strip! Keep your eye on the site in the next day or two. I should have my comic finished shortly!
And, by the way, if you want to submit a guest strip to me in the last few weeks the site is up, feel free. I’m basically opening the flood gates and giving everyone the chance to contribute. Think of it as a big going away party!
If you’re interested, send your comic to theaterhopper@hotmail.com. 525 pixels wide, JPG format, and no swears. Other than that, feel free to come up with whatever you like!
Talk to you soon!
