Yeah, yeah, yeah. We all know that the original Ghost Rider was clown shoes. And, yes, we all know that Nicholas Cage is probably the LAST guy to deservedly play Johnny Blaze. That said… I’m kind of digging the first trailer for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengence.
I like the way they’ve tweaked Ghost Rider’s look. He kind of looks like a charcoal briquette. Plus, keep in mind that this outing is being lensed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor – the same guys who directed Crank and Crank: High Voltage.
I know that those films have their critics – and rightfully so. But at least we know Ghost Rider won’t be boring this time.
…
Coulda used with out the pee-napalm, though.
I was disappointed with the first GR movie having grown up reading the comic books. This looks better but with a bit too much Crank in it. I doubt GR would eat bullets then shoot them back. (I loved Crank.) But hopefully they can keep the angst of being GR in the movie.
I think angst is out the window on this one.
Ghost Rider is a character whose power set hasn’t been fully explored. They’re starting to do that in his new book. The Rider has been stripped from Johnny Blaze and given to a new host. In his first encounter with it, the Ghost Rider summons a swarm of locusts. “I didn’t know you could do that!” he says. And the new host basically says “You never bothered to explore what the Ghost Rider was capable of because you thought of it like a curse.”
Ghost Rider is supposed to be God’s tool of vengeance against sin on Earth. It should be truly wicked – worse than the individuals it punishes – and capable of surprising improvisation.
In that respect, spitting bullets and peeing fire seems in keeping with the limitless nature of the character.
Angst was a bi-product of the 90’s. I want to see Ghost Rider open up a can of whoop-ass and I think that’s what we’re going to get here.
I like that they seem to be making him more of a monster instead of just a deep-voiced crazy guy with powers and a flaming skull. Definitely looks grittier and dirtier than the last outing, and that’s a good thing in my eyes.
People give Nic a lot of flak, but in my eyes, while he has made a bunch of just abysmal wrecks of films, he’s still capable of some decent acting with the right role and the right script. Maybe it’s just me, but I think he can pull it off if the writing is better this time out.
The problem with Nicholas Cage is that he’s limiting his chances of doing any decent acting with the right role and the right script because he’s taking EVERY offer that comes his way. A lot of that has to do with him digging himself out of bankruptcy at the moment.
Interesting to note, since they flew past it, that this is being produced by the Marvel Knights studio who brought us the most gory and ridiculous Punisher too. Should be interesting. I mean… the Punisher punched through a dude’s face. THROUGH. HIS. FACE.
It will be interesting to see how they go from the more family friendly version to this though. Hopefully they bump up the rating.
I kind of like Punisher: War Zone. It’s gory and ridiculous, but it’s about as close as Marvel has gotten to doing the character justice on the big screen. The Dolph Lundgren version doesn’t have the skull emblem and the Thomas Jane version is set in Miami. Both are just… wrong.
My only problem with War Zone is that Ray Stevenson as The Punisher doesn’t talk enough and Dominic West as Jigsaw talks WAY TOO MUCH. It’s like he studied at the Goombah School of Hollywood Gangsters. His performance was beyond ridiculous. It was stupid and lazy.
I’m sorry, but the pee-napalm was hilarious. I hope its not in the movie though.
I don’t have a problem with pee-fire as a concept. I just thought it was a tacky in terms of it being the last impression from the trailer. Pee-fire is all anything people talked about and I kind of feel like the character deserves better.
