If you’re a comic book nerd like I am, yesterday was a big day in terms of publicity photos leaked to the internet of actors dressed up like super heroes.
I submit for your approval Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man and (from an upcoming issue of Entertainment Weekly) Chris Evans as Captain America.
At first glance, I don’t really have a problem with either of these costume designs. I like the streamlined look of the new Spider-Man costume and I think it’s kind of clever how they integrated the spider emblem on the front into the ribcage. I also noticed they did something a little different with the gloves and made them more pointed at the cuff. Most importantly, they took off the raised webbing of the previous costume, which I always thought was impractical.
I think the texture of the costume is a little weird. It looks like leather, or something. Like the original costume, I have a hard time believing that this is something Peter Parker could have stitched together on his own. Not that a comic book movie has to be 100% plausible. It’s just something that sticks out in my mind.
If you look closely, there appear to be shiny, metallic nubs on the wrists. Possible web-shooters, anyone? I’ll be very eager to see what that looks like on-screen.
As for Evans and his Captain America duds, it looks right for the most part – if a little bulky. I have no complaints about the wings being painted on to his helmet and I think they made the costume the right amount of blue. So he still looks like Captain America, but also doesn’t look like a walking cartoon.
The most important detail to get right for me is the shield and they’ve obviously done that, so I’m not too concerned with this look. It’s very much in-step with the Ultimates version of Captain America and that’s never a bad thing.
What’s your take on these costume photos? Leave your comments below!
I’m more enthralled with the fact that it’s not Tobey Mcguire! As long as it’s not Sam Raimi too, we should be good to go.
Sorry, I like Evil Dead and everything, but… that franchise needs new people.
I love how rugged/dark Spider-man looks, but I never really want him to be a “dark” character. I like the lighthearted Spider-man much better.
The Spidey costume looks okay. I wish they’d kept it more faithful, but whatever. If the mask is right; I’ll live. I never liked the Tobey Maguire masks.
Cap is perfect (for the WW2 era). They’ve said several times that he’ll have a different one in the current day part of the movie — AND another one for the USO shows (which will most strongly resemble the classic Cap costume), so we still haven’t seen his “real” costume in the flesh.
Kat: I wouldn’t worry about the movie being “dark.” He just looks like he’s having one of his angsty moments — he had them ALL THE TIME in the ’60s comics.
They both look great. Initially I wasn’t enthusiastic about Spider-Man, because I really wanted Marvel to get the rights back, but things are looking good.
I’ve been impressed by Andrew Garfield since I saw Boy A and Red Riding, so I’m excited for this. Maybe I’m not as much as a comic book geek as my thirteen year old self, but I didn’t notice any differences in it. I just saw a Spider-man costume. As for Captain America, I never was a big fan, so I feel like I have little room to comment. I’m pretty stoked for both of these though.
Spider-Man is alright, I’ve got a couple of issues.
-Don’t like that it looks like rubber
-Don’t like the gloves being angled like that with the extra part
-The stomach looks like someone went in with Photoshoppe and just cloned down from the spider legs
-Finally, don’t like the lack of the red belt around the waist. This looks like a once piece suit and with the material it seems to be made out of, it would be likely that Peter would need someone’s help getting in and out of it.
Captain America is looking good. Love the shield! Also like that they included the wings in a non-rediculous way.
-Not a big fan of all the grey straps
I’m with you on the absence of the belt. That, combined with the spacing elements on the glove make me think of the Ben Reilly Spider-Man costume from the aftermath of The Clone Saga in the comic books.

Now that I’ve seen a hi-res version of Spidey (http://l.yimg.com/a/i/mo/spiderman_new_2000.jpg), I’m finding less to like about it. It looks too much like rubber or linquid latex. If he gets near an open flame it looks like it would melt to his skin. I don’t like that the webs don’t continue onto his fingers. From the hi-res pic, it looks like he’s got the red belt, but it’s only on the back, so that’s weird. I have a feeling that the back is going to look really odd.
Not only do the webs not continue to his fingertips, they also don’t look like they continue past his chest…
I’ll start with Cap… It looks pretty good, very much along the lines of The Ultimates Cap in his WWII outfit. The shield also looks good. The straps don’t look too bad, and add to the military webbing look. The helmet looks great.
As for Spidey, I’m not all that keen…. The red is a bit dark, and I’m not sure of all the patterned material on the chest. I agree with Brian that he needs the belted area to break up the blue. I’m still a bit disenchanted with Spidey, particularly after no 3!
I just don’t like that the straps are that light grey color. If they were a darker color, I wouldn’t mind.
