This comic is many thinks. It is scatological, it re-enforces gender stereotypes and it throws stones at giants.
I mean no disrespect to Kevin Smith. I just couldn’t avoid a good poop joke. I’m sure he understands. After all, he included The Golgothan in Dogma.
I also wasn’t particularly crazy about falling into the trope of the put-upon wife who tolerates the slovenly antics of the layabout husband. But like I said… poop joke.
I DO IT FOR THE COMEDY, PEOPLE!
As for the movie itself, I think it’s kind of weird that Kevin Smith is being billed as the director of Cop Out when he didn’t write it. Like I said in the strip, he’s not exactly known for his dynamic camera work and I think he’d be the first to admit it. As a matter of fact, I’m pretty SURE he’s admitted it on the commentary tracks of several of his movies.
Doesn’t mean the dude can’t grow as an artist. I just don’t think it’s where his strength lies. Personally, I’d love to read a kick-ass script and have him hand it off to… I dunno… Wes Anderson, or something. See what happens.
Actually, I think I would probably rather watch him act in a movie than direct at this point. Maybe it’s just me, but I thought Smith was pretty good in Catch and Release. I’m being serious!
I don’t know what to think of Cop Out. If Smith’s name weren’t attached, I would have absolutely no interest. As someone pointed out to me, Cop Out looks like the kind of movie Tracy Morgan’s character from 30 Rock would do for a quick paycheck. Not a compliment.
Bruce Willis? I have no idea what Bruce Willis is supposed to be doing in this thing other than throw a wink and a nod to his hard-boiled action hero roles from his past. “John McClane is in this?! I gotta see it!” Well, not exactly and… no you don’t.
What do you guys think of Cop Out? It could be fun, but I’m on the fence. I guess, to me, it looks like a fun rental. I’m wondering if anyone out there has been anticipating this movie at all. How much does Kevin Smith’s involvement motivate you to see the film? Do you think he lent more to the production than lens work? Maybe he helped the actors with a few funny ad libs? The mind boggles, so leave your comments below!

Sort of. Except no one pays me a million dollars when I drop a steaming pile.
It looks like a rental to me. I loved Kevin in college (and for a while after) but we saw him speak at Wizard World Philly when my wife was pregnant with our first child. We both sort of came to the realization that we were sort of outgrowing his style of humor. I still haven’t seen Clerks II. That being said, I love Tracy Morgan and I like that Bruce is doing a comedy again. I still love his antics in Blind Date. Anyway, I really want Cop Out to be good, but it still looks like a renter (or a buy when it comes out on DVD if my friends review it well) at best.
I’m going to go see this tonight. I’m a huge Kevin Smith fan, and while I’m skeptical that he’s working with someone else’s material, I have a hard time believing that he’d direct a movie with a script he didn’t approve of. So in a sense, I’m trusting his judgement in the same way that I trusted his judgement when he made a movie outside of his usual universe (Zach & Miri Make A Porno). And as for the poop joke, well done Tom.
Kevin Smith is very good at writing his own dark comedies. As this is the first time he’s directed something he didn’t, in part at least, write it’s going to be interesting to see. I don’t know though, I will have to wait for the reviews I trust.
Just from the trailer I get the feeling Tracy Morgan’s character is the sort of person you have to line up to hate and Bruce Willis signed on to stretch his comedic muscles (he does have them, just doesn’t get to use them very often).
As for your comic, there’s nothing wrong with a poop joke if it’s done right. which it is, although I have to ask does Cami really need THAT many cleaning products? If so Tom might want to eat some lettuce…
I’m optimistic of this film. I wish the kept the name “A Couple of Dicks” though, but what are you going to do. As long as Tracy Morgan’s character isn’t to overbearing.

Cop Out looks to be fun, but I doubt I’ll have time to see it. On the flipside, if anyone gets to see Hot Tub Time Machine in 2 weeks, I recommend seeing it for some good laughs, not for a good movie. The movie is funny and quotable, but I wouldn’t call it a good movie. However, I laughed most of the movie, so that is clearly a good thing.
I wonder how many “comedies” actually succeed at that
I think I’ll see Cop Out this weekend. I was on the fence as this seemed like the type of movie where every funny bit is in the previews (and I’m always laughing when watching its previews), but it’s getting decent reviews, so I’ll give it a shot. Besides, there’s nothing else in theaters so I’ll go see this one by default. I was interested in seeing Shutter Island, but all the so-so talk has turned me off from it, plus my wife actually hated it and called it way too boring. I’ll wait for the DVD release on that one.
I saw the previews and immediately thought “wow someone took a 20 year old script, made the young guy the black one, and replaced danny glover with bruce willis.” Totally NOT interested.
Personally I’m not too interested in it. I would be more interested if it was both written and directed by Kevin Smith. That and I’m not a Tracy Morgan fan at all. I like Bruce Willis, but not enough to go and see this movie. I’m sure this movie is funny through most of it, but the thought of Tracy Morgan being annoying and over the top for 1.5 hours really turns me off, I’m going to wait to for the DVD release I think.

I’m excited to see Cop Out, and was planning on seeing it this weekend. This was made even better when I mentioned to the film to my girlfriends, she was excited to see it. I mentioned that it was directed by the “Zack and Miri” guy (as that’s the only other smith film she knows) and that didn’t deter her at all.
I think Smith’s involvement was one of enthusiasm, he has spoken of how this is the kind of movie he loved when he was younger and he jumped at the opportunity to direct it.
I dunno about this one – maybe he’s trying to prove to the studios that he can direct something he didn’t write? Maybe he just needs a paycheck? Hell, maybe he just thought it’d be a trip to work with Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan and make a few jokes about other movies. In any case, I don’t think this is the type of project where anyone walks in expecting a unique artistic vision. All he really has to do as a director is make sure he doesn’t get in the way of the funny.
I’d like to see him try to take on something a little more serious. Like “Jersey Girl” but without the Bennifer nonsense.
My spring break is next week so the top movies on my list to see are The Crazies and Shutter Island. Cop Out just looks kinda stupid. Maybe something to rent but nothing I’d pay $11 for

i already saw this movie when it was called “showtime”, with de niro as the put-upon old pro and eddie murphy as the show-biz obsessed rookie goofball.
that movie was ridiculous from beginning to end (put it this way; william shatner blended right in!) with the glaring exceptions of de niro and mos def, who apparently decided they were acting in a serious movie that no one else on set knew about.
I am on the fence about this movie. I want to see it because Kevin Smith directed it, but I don’t want to see it because I don’t really like the buddy cop films.
I won’t be watching it. When I saw the first trailer, I wanted to. When I saw five different trailers with what must have been 90% of the film’s jokes, I lost interest.
This movie is apparently an homage to buddy cop movies (how it does that specifically other than BEING yet another buddy cop movie I don’t know, just what I’ve been told). Since Hot Fuzz is also an homage/send-up, I think we need a third movie to determine the winner.
Willis/Morgan and Pegg/Frost, racing each other to take out the bad guys. For a level playing field let’s make them zombie Die Hard villains. Interference with each other is to be strictly limited to “hijinks”, mostly perpetrated by the silly member of each team, with the hard-nosed veteran of the winning team allowed one prank at the end to show they’ve lightened up. A sort of “victory lap” if you will.
Somehow or another I’d never heard of this one until they started showing the trailers on TV. It looked pretty bad from those trailers so I was surprised when I learned that Kevin Smith made it. (Normally I like all of his movies, even Jersey Girl.) The red band trailer did make the movie look up to par though, so who knows…
I’m thinking rental as well. What else has Bruce Willis been in recently? I figured he’d retired or something after his last few bombs. I’d expect a little bit more from Tracy Morgan so maybe I’m being too hard on the movie as I haven’t seen it yet and it has done decent in the box office.
I was going to say this is like when Frank Miller directed The Spirit, but then I realized he also wrote the dang thing… so I’m not sure how it all went so wrong there.
