You have no idea how long I’ve kept that terrible pun in my back pocket. I don’t care if it isn’t original. I wasn’t going to pass up using it!
I think this might be the first time in since, well… ever that I’ve had a comic up and running while I’m away at a convention. Usually I have a string of guest strips lined up for you. But I figured since I made such a big deal about the 7th anniversary and the 1,000th comic milestone, it would benefit me to keep things going a little bit.
I finished this comic and blog Wednesday night in preparation of being away. So that means right now, as you’re reading this, I’m hanging out at table #3414 on Artist Alley at Chicago Comic-Con. If you’re in town, I sincerely hope you come to visit me!
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra comes out today and it is very likely that I will be seeing the movie with my friends Gordon McAlipin from Multiplex, Zach Miller from Joe and Monkey and Joe Dunn from Joe Loves Crappy Movies as I have depicted here. At least, I hope that’s what happens. We have a nice little tradition of seeing movies together when we’re in town for the convention and I hope everyone can make it.
As for the movie, I kind of think it’s a win-win situation. Based of the awful trailer, I am fully prepared for this movie to be terrible but plan on having a good time soaking up the cheese. If it turns out to be awesome (as some early reviews have suggested in a guilty-pleasure kind of way) then that sounds good, too.
In the meantime, if you want to stay up to date with me on the convention floor, but sure to check out my Twitter account. I’ll be posting status updates from my phone as well as taking advantage of AudioBoo. I noticed a lot of web comic guys using it during San Diego Comic Con and I’m eager to try it out.
Basically, it’s like a mini-podcast. I record up to 3:00 minutes of audio into my phone and AudioBoo posts it to their site – complete with a link from Twitter, so you get complete coverage! Fun little app.
If Twitter isn’t your thing, then please feel free to enjoy this shot by shot remake of the trailer for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra that replaces the actors with action figures. Considering the movie is basically a 2 hour long toy commercial, the piece seems to cut to the heart of the matter.
Is anyone planning on seeing G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra this weekend? What are your expectations? Are you excited? Did the trailer make you skeptical like it made me skeptical? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
Heh! G.I. Joe... Did you see how bad the trailer was?
More like G.I. JOKE! Amirite?!
Okay! Is everyone ready to ditch tom and have fun without him?
I wouldn’t say I’m excited, but I’m very eager to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt play Cobra Commander. Also, I’m a pretty big Christopher Eccleston fan. So whether it’s terrible or not, those two should be worth seeing.
I’m looking forward to it. I was a big fan of the cartoon and the toys were always fun, also I actually liked The Mummy. Plus it’s Ray Park as Snake Eyes.
As long as there isn’t a scene where Storm Shadow pees on someone or Hawk and Duke have an awkward talk about masturbation I think it’ll be okay.
Perhaps it’s the fact that I used to watch the cartoon in the late eighties that leads me to dream that this movie will reignite a forgotten love of G. I. Joe.
My Local Paper thinks it lacks something…

“Ah, I guess I shouldn’t go in to the movie without a bottle of whiskey.
Now we know.
And Knowing is half the battle!”
I saw G.I. Joe at midnight last night and it was a really fun action movie. It was way better than both Transformers movies. I have to pick up the cartoon on DVD now to relive the glory days.

Well, working at a local movie theater at night (second job, thanks crappy economy), I am *NOT* looking forward to this movie coming out. The trailer for the movie stinks, and I fully expect it to be as busy as Transformers was. Someone want to work my box office shift for me tonight?
I totally thought you would have titled this something like “pun-ished” or something.
Anyway, I guess red and blue lasers are the other half. So taking Ryan’s local paper into account, I guess you should bring whiskey and laser pointers to round out the movie.
My son is dying to see this movie, so I’ll probably end up taking him to see it. I’d just as soon wait for the DVD, but I am curious to see what they’ve done. Based on the trailer I don’t expect much, but maybe it will end up being one of those guilty pleasure popcorn-action flicks.
Have a great time in Chicago, Tom. Any chance that you’ll have extra buttons to pass out after it’s over?
Holy crap, Zach Miller is alive AND updating?
You just made my day a little bit better.
Like I said, I remember G.I. Joes wearing camo… where did these metal suits come from? These techy updates are stupid, and it seems like a gimmick to try and hang onto the popularity of transformers by turning G.I. Joes into smaller versions of the robot carnage creators. They’re like cousins now. And the fact that the plot looks totally horrible even leads more toward gimmick.
I’m definitely skipping on this one.
To be honest, I went in expecting zero from the horrific looking trailer. I was totally blown away. For a summer blockbuster, it has the best action of 2009 bar none. For the MOST part, it kept relatively close to it’s predecessors. Yes, you find out who Cobra Commander is, which loses a bit of it’s mystery… but not too bad.
Tom,
I saw G.I. JOE at the Hasbro Charity Premiere on Monday. It was very well done. I also got to meet Stephen Sommers and chatted with Lorenzo di Bonaventura. It was a fun night and a fun movie. My review is here http://www.benspark.com/the-other-half-of-the-battle.html. Ample spoiler warnings too.
No expectations means no disappointment. I got my GI Joe goodness months ago when GI Joe Resolute came out.
I went to that Muvico across from the con. I must say. That was an opulent theater.
I saw the movie last night. It. Was. Awful.
I will sum up: the actors were phoning it in. The writers apparently phoned it in as well. Predictable in all aspects of plot. The car chase scene through Paris was probably the only redeeming quality. Only to be un-redeemed because what do you think they use to destroy a base hidden under the polar ice cap? Why ice of course!!! You might be asking yourself how ice *sinks* to the bottom of the ocean. But really it does! Ice sinks! I saw it on GI Joe.
All in all, the film was s**t.
It was a strange film in that i felt nothing but utter loathing for the “Joes” and their inability to shut up. Snakeeyes takes the prize for being the only Joe not to be a total jackass as he at least doesn’t talk.
The strange part comes in the shape of the bad guys, who with the exception of the OVERLY stereotyped asian ninja (never seen that before) were incredibly well played, well developed and actually likeable characters. In the end, despite knowing the Joes would win, you just kept wishing Cobra would get away with this one as they were so much better; in every way.
Even rated on its own merits as a mindless actions flick, the CG (apart fomr the particle effects) sucked, the action didn’t sit right and ALL the dialogue except for the bad guys felt forced.
Now you know this movie sucks… and knowing is half the battle.
For what it is worth, I thought it was great mindless fun/action. Also, Louis, ice with bits of metal attached likely will sink. ;-P
