I hate to keep picking on David Spade, but since the debut of Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star, there has just been too much delicious Spade-related news items to pass up.
As you may have heard, Dickie was number one at the box office over the weekend. But did you know it’d didn’t earn as much as the studio originally estimated?
So instead of the $7 million they said it raked in, it actually made $6.7 million. That means it bested the number 2 movie – Jeepers Creepers 2 – by less than $100,000.
On top of it all, Paramount Pictures and Happy Madison Productions (Adam Sandler’s shingle) are being sued by Wham-O! – the company that manufactures the Slip N’ Slide. According to them, Spade uses the summertime staple in a dangerous way and that could leave the company libel to lawsuits if any morons decide to follow suit. They also charge the filmmakers violated its trademark by using the product without permission.
Read this article at CNN for the whole story.
In other news, Spade is gathering up all his former child star cronies to do a week on Hollywood Squares to promote the movie.
I just leave that one hanging out there for a minute.
Anyway, enough Spade bashing. Onto some site news.
Some of you may have noticed the site has been running slow the last couple of days. Unfortunately that was due to some hosting problems our crew over at Dayfree Press was experiencing. Those little banners on the left hand side and bottom of the site are hosted on their end and it was slowing things down a bit. Things should be up to speed now, but let me know if you run into any more slowdown.
Also, I’ve finished inking my SECOND POSTER that I will be selling on the site soon.
I won’t reveal the design until later, but I’m thinking of debuting them at the Minneapolis Fallcon (WHICH I WILL BE ATTENDING OCT 4,5). So if you’re in the area, you’ll get first dibs.
That’s about all that’s going on in my life right now. I’ll update you if there is more to tell later!
I just wanted to remind everyone that we have an open space for advertising your web site there under the logo of the site.
Prices are very fair and I promise to pimp you out until I’m blue in the face.
If you feel like doing business with a reputable, hard-working Midwesterner, more information on the subject can be found here.

WHERE DOES HE GET THOSE WONDERFUL TOYS?

I gotta say I’m pretty pumped to see Once Upon A Time In Mexico. I’m a big Robert Rodriguez fan and I’m looking forward to his return to more kinetic, adult storylines. Hey, the Spy Kids movies were fun, but how about something for those of us who don’t eat Happy Meals these days?
I think the fact Rodriguez scored Johnny Depp is some kind of gift from heaven. Even though filming was completed in 2001, Depp couldn’t be hotter right now. I see his portrayal of psychotic CIA agent Sands as another in a long line of fun and interesting characters.
I was watching IFC last night and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (Jared’s favorite movie) happened to be on. That movie is so weird, Depp’s performance as Hunter S. Thompson sometimes gets buried under all the craziness. But watching it just reminded me how awesome he really is.
Has anyone else noticed that all of the ads for this movie almost entirely feature Depp? If you didn’t know the history of the franchise, you totally wouldn’t know Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek are in it, too! I guess that’s just the studio trying to milk a little interest off of Depp’s turn as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean.
As excited as I am for this movie, I was also pumped to learn Thursday night that Christian Bale has been tapped to be the new Batman in the film being lensed by former Memento director Christopher Nolan.
I think Bale is a really good choice. He can be very polished and W.A.S.P.y on the surface, but underneath, you can see the cogs turning. And when he erupts, it’s brilliant to watch. I think physically he’ll be the closest to Batman we’ve ever seen on screen. That’s good news for the comic book geek community.
I’m looking forward to the weekend. I’m planning on catching up on some films. It seems like forever since I’ve been to a theater!
Hey gang. I just wanted to leave a quick note to inform you of a small change to the front page of the site.
I’m not sure if everyone was aware of it, but beneath the blogs, there used to be a little drop down menu called “CHOOSE YOUR FAVORITE STRIP!”
I’ve removed this option from the front page because, frankly, it was bogging the site down. It occured to me after looking at the source code from the page and it included the date, name and numerical order of every strip. I realized it just wasn’t worth it.
I don’t know if it was a feature many of you employed or not, but hopefully you should notice an decrease in the amount of time it takes the site to load. Besides, we’ve got a great archive page that will help you find everything you’re looking for.
THE HEART OF ROCK AND ROLL IS IN GOTHAM

By now you’ve probably heard that Christian Bale will be taking up The Mantle of The Bat in the next Warner Bros. film adaptation of The Caped Crusader.
I think it’s a smart move to pick Bale. The guy is a perfect mix of dark and light and he’s got the W.A.S.P.y demeanor of Bruce Wayne down cold. And if they decide to go all camp again like they did in Batman & Robin, he can roll with it. I mean, did anyone see Reign of Fire? Ugh!
Actually, I’m pretty sure they’ll stay away from the camp stuff as long as Memento director Christopher Nolan is in charge… and he is. I just hope he remembers to take the damn nipples off the costume first.
Today’s comic is an apt progression in my personal interests as of late. Right now, I’m in full geek-out mode. I’ve been hovering around comic book shops lately – something I haven’t done since before I went to college. I used to be a hard core collector and I’ve kind of been missing it. So I’m picking up books here and there. I snagged the 20 years due JLA/Avengers crossover. I just needed to see it for myself.
Maybe subconsciously I’m gearing up for the big Minneapolis FallCon I’ll be attending with my good buddies from No Pants Tuesday, Nothing Nice to Say and Movie Punks. As they say in the movies, “It’s on like Donkey Kong!” We’ve got a booth and everything. You’ll have to come see us on October 4 and 5.
But I guess I’m getting away from the movie stuff aren’t I? Well, I saw Once Upon A Time in Mexico and American Splendor this weekend. One of them I loved and the other one I hated. I’ll leave it up to you to guess which is which before I come back with the details later.
Ciao!
Uh oh, kids! Looks like you’re in for some continuity! Should you check back on Thursday for the next installment? I’m just say-in’…
Underworld comes out this weekend and I think it’s tale of star-crossed vampire and werewolf lovers is gonna strike a chord with closet goths everywhere. I guess they’re calling it the Romeo and Juliet for the monster-loving crowd.
Frankly, I’m just happy to see a movie with a good werewolf in it. Vampires always get the screen time. I guess they’re more interesting and romantic figures than a howling hairball. But can you remember the last really good werewolf picture? It’s been a while.
Everyone needs to check out our latest advertiser, Destined For Nothing. Unlike most comics, these guys have a political bend to their work. They tackle actual real-world stuff and make it funny. Give ’em a little clickeroo for me. I appreciate it.
By the way, if you’re thinking about buying a poster, better make it soon. There are only 30 left and I plan on taking whatever I have in stock to the Minneapolis FallCon on October 4 and 5. I have a pretty strong feeling I will sell out if I do.
So don’t let procrastination be your excuse! Buy a poster now, before they’re gone forever!
I found today’s strip to be very funny. I for one will definately check out the strip tomorrow (as if I am not checking it daily anyway.)
I am looking forward to seeing Underworld. If Kate Beckinsale looks half as good in this movie as she was in Serendipity, then I know the movie will be sweet. (I know looks aren’t everything, but she is obviously cool and that is the most important thing.)
If I am not making any sense, it could be the cold medicine.
Anyway, I rented the movies Scratch and Dead Calm. Scratch is a documentary about turntablism. It was pretty cool. It inspired me to dust off my 1200’s and spin a few tunes before remembering why I gave up the dream of becoming a turntablist myself. #1 I suck at it.
Still fun though.
Dead Calm was dead cool. I liked it a lot, though I wanted to know more about Billy Zane’s experiences before hooking up with Nicole Kidaman and Sam Neill.
I also watched City Slickers 2 and was entertained. It was quite a bit better than I had envisioned, but still not as good as the original. Every time I look at Billy Crystal I think of his character in Monsters Inc.
I went to see Once Upon a Time in Mexico last Saturday. I was again entertained, but I am unsure if I really liked it or thought it was good. It definately had good parts, but as a whole the movie was a little jumbled. This would not be a good film for someone who can’t apply suspension on disbelief. A great (as usual) performance from Johnny Depp helped this movie greatly.
Stick around for the closing credits. There is a lot of crazy guitar music which takes advantage of the surround sound.

I noticed Absath from Ctrl+Alt+Del is auctioning off an original piece of art on eBay and it got me thinking that this is something I could be doing as well.
One problem: Is anyone interested?
Fire off an e-mail and let me know if you would buy an original piece of artwork from yours truly.
I’m also considering selling commissioned pieces at the Minneapolis FallCon this October 4 and 5. If that goes well, I might carry over the offer to the site.

Betcha didn’t think I would have a new comic for you on a Thursday, didja?
Just goes to show that you’ve gotta check the site often because there’s NO TELLING when I might go off the deep end and give you extra content!
I really enjoy it when a storyline slowly materializes from out of nowhere. Usually I’m much more focused on the quick zinger and I don’t give a lot of thought toward expanding my ideas.
I do that partially because I want Theater Hopper to work no matter where you jump into it. Sure, there are subtle references to past comics that enrich the experience if you’ve been a reader for a while. But I don’t ever want to get to the point where the punch line is… oh, I dunno… “TURNIPS!” and the only way you’ll get it is if you’ve been reading for 5 weeks.
That said, this Underworld storyline will wrap up tomorrow. I’ve got to keep things moving since there are so many new flicks coming out this weekend. Things are starting to look up at the local multi-plex.
In case you missed it yesterday, I suggest everyone check out our latest advertiser Destined For Nothing. I think you’re really like what’s going on over there.
And while we’re at it, show a little love to our other advertiser Digital Entertainment News. That site is a class act all the way.
Give these people some due attention. Their contribution to the site helps keep us going.
Oh, also – if you missed it – read yesterday’s blog. I posed a question about auctioning off original art that I still haven’t heard back on.
Cheers!
Well, that concludes are little goth saga for the week. I hope you enjoyed it. I know I did. Its fun exercise to graft a new look and personality on one of the characters. Things should be (relatively) back to normal on Monday.
This weekend is pretty big for new releases. I’m feeling a little overwhelmed because I’m not sure what we’ll see first.
Obviously, I’d like to see Underworld. But Cami doesn’t care much for vampires or werewolves. Funny. She never had a problem with Interview with the Vampire. I guess when a bloodsucker is played by Brad Pitt, it’s not so difficult to stomache.
Oddly, Cami is interested in seeing Cold Creek Manor this weekend. I don’t care much for Sharon Stone, but I’ve been very interested in Dennis Quaid ever since Frequency and The Rookie. He’s one of the few actors I’ve come to respect more the older he gets. He just seems more and more comfortable on screen. Plus, I like good haunted house stories… suspense, not gore. I think this will be the pony to bet on this weekend.
Beyond that, not much else to say. Seriously.
